The exhibition season has arrived, so the round-up finally has actual news to review. This week, the Flames take two from the Canucks, but not without a toll, hope springs eternal at everyone else's camps, and Brooks Orpik adds another questionable hit to his resume.

The Flames begin the preliminary phase of the season with a pair of encounters against the Canucks, and while the pre-season has merely been a place for the veterans to ease in to things for past clubs, this fall might actually see an expensive player have a meeting with the Turk. That decision is still a few weeks out, though, so this evening will mostly act as a last chance for a few marginal types to get a game in the Flaming C before being sent away.

Hockey is just that much closer with the opening of camp today, and it appears from a distance that the Alberta weather is providing a proper atmosphere for the proceedings. I only saw about 25 minutes of this afternoon's tilt between the Flames and Canucks, but it bore a striking resemblance to the sort of affairs we'd witnessed earlier in the week, so an expedient summary appears to be in order:

Flame skaters get shots,

score a few goals. Goaltending?

Err, not quite that good.

And with that, my coverage of this year's prospect tournament is at its end. Thanks for your comments this week.

Prospect Tournament Post-Game: Shots but no goals? Yes, you are Flame prospects.

I'll keep this fairly short tonight. There are nights when things just don't quite work out in spite of a decent effort, and for the Heat-in-waiting this evening, that was the type of evening they endured as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the baby Grease in Penticton. A shaky first period and five minutes of serial defensive ineptitude in the second allowed the Oiler kids enough chances to seal matters, despite being out-shot 37-35 by the Flame prospects in a reasonably entertaining tilt for a practice game.
