Summer is nearly done, and the doldrums around the NHL that come with August are almost at an end. Almost, of course, being the operative phrase, so the round-up is mostly bereft of serious news, but we can muddle on anyway. This week, a Flame prospect opens up regarding his season of uncertainty, a few vets sign for peanuts, and the league looks at potential rule adjustments.

Alex Tanguay - A Closer Look at EV

One of the most interesting moves of this off-season was the return of Alex Tanguay to Calgary. The 30 year old winger left Cowtown after an unhappy 07/08 campaign, with the player and then-coach Keenan equally happy to have a parting of the ways. Since then, Tanguay endured injury in Montreal, followed by a sub-standard year on the Gulf Coast, which has lead people to wonder if he's on the slide.

After an unavoidable delay due to life's usual intrusions, the round-up returns. This week, the Flames re-up their elder statesman, Ilya Kovalchuk is on the loose, and Tomas Kaberle's Leaf days might be numbered.

Calgary's PP: Bad by design?

As I look back at last season, I'll confess that for all the annoyances I may have had with certain players on last year's Flames' club, I'm not sure that they always were properly deployed by their coach. One particular gripe that I had virtually all season was the insistence of Brent Sutter to use Regehr or Staios on the PP unit. Neither man has any recent history suggesting that they add any offence, and what made that choice even more galling was the fact that the Flames employed players that had excelled as PP point men elsewhere, and I'm not talking about defencemen either.

Arbitration time is nearly done, so there's been quite a bit of activity happening around the league. In today's round-up, the Flames and Ian White beat the hangman, Frolov and Poni find new homes, and the Coyotes, well, who's surprised by that nonsense anymore?
