The NHL's first week of free agency has passed with nary an ESPN special in sight, but that doesn't mean that it's been without interest. This week in the round-up, we'll review the fall-out from the Flames' attempt to recreate, well, something or other, as well as news from other clubs, and I'll have a look at the Globe and Mail's series on the potential for new Canadian franchises.

One of the interesting bits of news from last week's shock signing of Olli Jokinen was the fact that the Flames had included a No-Movement Clause in the Finn's two year deal. Add in Alex Tanguay's NMC, and the Flames are in a position where 10 members of their current roster have at least some restriction on their movement.
That's currently the most in the NHL, and I suspect that most of you don't consider that development in a positive light.
Well, there's that...

Look, I'm not going to try to put any lipstick on this pig. Olli Jokinen's tenure in Calgary was a complete failure, full stop. His acquisition and subsequent trade bookended a period that one might hope had cured Darryl Sutter from making any rash moves.

Our nation's 143rd birthday is just a day away and since the start of the NHL's free agency period is now as much a part of that occasion for hockey fans as fireworks and bad face-paintings of maple leafs, it seems like a good time for the round-up. This week, the Flames waive Ales Kotalik, but for unknown ends, Sergei Kostitsyn will get a chance to try out his act on Barry Trotz, and a Star moves on.

This weekend's activities in Los Angeles passed by with the Flames doing very little. I'm not actually surprised that they didn't move a body or two during the draft, largely because teams that have limited assets aren't often able manufacture anything worthwhile. Making chicken salad usually does actually require the proper ingredients, if you catch my drift. That noted, even by Calgary's standards, this weekend's series of selections was straight vanilla, no chaser.
