The round up comes to you this time around from Austin, with nothing but Shiner, brisket and hipsters as far as the eye can see. The first two are good for certain, and because I'm a very tolerant man, I'll should be able to manage being in the presence of a bunch of Lambert-esque types until next Saturday night with minimal fuss.

At any rate, in this week's review of matters near and far, the Flames hit a patch of turbulence, the Flyers' lead atop the East shrinks, and the concussion issue isn't just an undertone any more.

March 3 News and Notes

With the silliness of the NHL swap meet ending on Monday afternoon, it's all serious business for the rest of the season as teams play out the last quarter, so a roundup seems in order to set the scene. This time around, the Flames split in the Midwest, the Islanders' loose cannon goes off, and matters in the desert might be heading for a finale. Or not.

Kent's reviewed the Flames' two acquisitions here and here, and given the relatively minor nature of those moves, I'm not sure they rate any further scrutiny. With that in mind, here are a few brief thoughts about some of the other deals that happened earlier today.

There’s been a fair bit of talk about last night’s trade between the Avs and Blues, and the consensus is that however things shake out, the Avs acquired a future first pairing defender, the type of player that’s generally hard to find unless you draft them yourself.

Trading for picks? Seller beware.

One trade that caught my eye over the last week was the move of Kris Versteeg to the Flyers for two draft picks. I suspect that most people, seeing a Leaf team in the dumper, think that getting a first and third rounder for a second/third line type like Versteeg was a good return. Was it really, though? Pension Plan Puppets has a good look at players drafted in the first round from 1997-2004 here, but I wanted to also look at players of a more recent vintage, as well as having a look at the potential for a payoff from the third rounder.
