FGD 48: Hunting the predators (7pm MT, SN West)

When it comes to the Western Conference playoff race, there's a quote that I like (attributed to author Jim Butcher) that seems to apply to this situation: "You don't have to run faster than the bear to get away. You just have to run faster than the guy next to you." The Calgary Flames don't have to be the best team in their conference to make the playoffs; they just have to be better than one or two teams. As our pal Pat Steinberg has noted on Sportsnet 960 The Fan in recent days: all they have to do is win more than the teams around them and they're in.

Tonight, the Flames have a golden opportunity to trip up a team between them and the proverbial bear (which represents a hockey-less spring) as they host the Nashville Predators. There are nine teams with a strong shot at a playoff spot, with Calgary and Nashville currently dueling for the final wildcard spot (when you factor in points percentages rather than pure points). A win tonight can trip up the Predators and give the Flames some breathing room.

The puck drops on this important game at 7 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan!

It's been a year of ups and downs for the Calgary Flames thus far; downs at the beginning of the season and more recently some successes. While everyone's been a bit preoccupied with Chad Johnson's heroics, Dougie Hamilton's resurgence, Mikael Backlund's consistency and Johnny Gaudreau's offensive wizardry, some history-making accomplishments have been set by the Flames' captain Mark Giordano.

These accomplishments by Giordano place him rather favourably in the annals of Flames history.

After a weekend where they captured just one of a possible four points, tonight's game against the Florida Panthers was a big one for the Calgary Flames. They came out of the gate looking motivated and despite giving up a pair of early goals, they controlled the balance of this game and were full marks in a 5-2 victory over their guests.

Here's how it went down.

FGD 47: Invasion of the fancy cats (7pm MT, SN West)

The Calgary Flames face an interesting test tonight in their quest for a return to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Suddenly losers of four of their last six games, the Flames will host the Florida Panthers this evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Panthers are a talented, young bunch (for the most part) and in terms of their standing in the East are basically that conference's version of the Flames. They're not perfect, but they're about as good as Calgary is – maybe a tad better – and so tonight will be a big test for the home side.

The game begins just after 7 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan!

How will the Flames replace their free agent defenders?

For many people that follow the Calgary Flames, July 1, 2017 has long been circled on the calendar. In addition to being Jarome Iginla's 40th birthday, it's also the date that several hefty contracts signed by the Flames expire. That means that as of the end of this playing season, players like Dennis Wideman and Deryk Engelland have their deals expire and hit the unrestricted free agent market.

That's the good news. The bad news is the Flames have to replace them, and try to do so without breaking the bank. We've taken a look at a few ways they might be able to do just that.
