The 2013 season is almost finished, so it's time to look towards the future. The benefit of the last dozen games and the audition process is that the Flames and their coaching staff knows which players fit and which don't. Here's a quick gander at five guys who, while they haven't locked themselves into full-time jobs in the NHL quite yet, are really close. (Well, okay, four that are close and one that's a bit of a stretch.)

Over the past month your Calgary Flames have made a lot of moves. Gone are Jarome Iginla, Jay Bouwmeester and Blake Comeau. Acquired in their place were a lot of future assets – Ben Hanowski, Kenny Agostino, Reto Berra, Mark Cundari, two first round draft picks and a fifth round pick, all in this year's draft
In addition, the Flames have signed a ton of guys. In the past month, the club has come to terms with Tyler Wotherspoon, Laurent Brossoit, Hanowski, Berra, John Ramage, Markus Granlund and Joey MacDonald.
So with those moves done, where do they stand going forward?

We're into the last four games of the 2013 Calgary Flames season. It ends on the road, so those of you cheering for losses and good odds in the draft lottery can rejoice, because the Flames have been downright lousy on the road this year. They boast the league's 15th best home record and 29th best road record, which is how they enter the game at 25th overall with a 18-22-4 record.
Despite all the injuries, inconsistency and everything else, Calgary can still finish at .500. It's a minor miracle.

Folks, the Calgary Flames home schedule is over. They defeated the Anaheim Ducks by a 3-1 score on Friday night in their 24th (and final) home date of the truncated 2013 season.
They finish their home schedule with a record of 13-9-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. If their road record wasn't so horrible this year (5-13-2), maybe they would've made some noise. Nevertheless, they came into their last home contest and played a smart, energetic game.

We're down to the nitty-gritty, folks, as the Flames (16-22-4) can mathematically be eliminated from the post-season (and get a little closer to a high draft pick) with a loss tonight against the Detroit Red Wings (20-15-7).
Tonight's game starts at 7:30 on TSN and your radio friends at Sportsnet 960 The Fan.
