Just over 14 months ago, the Calgary Flames were backed into a corner. With former first round draft pick Tim Erixon refusing to sign with the club and the team poised to lose him for a mere compensatory second round pick, the team rolled the dice on a trade with the New York Rangers. Just before the deadline to sign draft picks, the Flames sent Erixon and a fifth round pick to the Rangers for prospect Roman Horak and a pair of second round picks (used to take Tyler Wotherspoon and Markus Granlund).

Our colleague Eric T over at NHLNumbers has put together a nice addition to the world of advanced stats – time on ice quality of competition (or TOI qualcomp).
The logic is rather simple: a team's best players will generally play the most minutes, the second-best play the second most and so on. As such, you can rate the quality of competition that a club's players face based on the amount of ice-time their opposition usually gets.

BABY FLAMES COLLECT GOALIES
The Flames organization continued to collect goaltenders at a torrid pace this past week. After signing Leland Irving on July 27, the Abbotsford Heat followed suit with a pair of signings. The baby Flames inked veteran netminder Barry Brust on August 8 and Danny Taylor on August 10.

Possibly the biggest news of last week – if it can be called that – was the departure of defenseman Clay Wilson. Wilson signed a deal with Donbass Donetsk, which raised a few comparisons and questions.
