A lot of ink, digital and otherwise, has been used to describe the changing fortunes of the Calgary Flames at the NHL Entry Draft. For various reasons, the 2008 Draft has been pointed to as the year of the most obvious turn-around. The draft produced several decent prospects who have been able to tip their toes into the NHL pond and not look horrible – notably T.J. Brodie, Greg Nemisz and Lance Bouma.

One year ago, newly-promoted Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster went to the podium at the Xcel Energy Center and pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Drafting 13th overall in the first round, Feaster chose Swiss winger Sven Baertschi. Within the year, Baertschi had dominated the WHL and spent two weeks in the NHL with the Flames during an injury recall stint.
The rookie didn’t look a bit out of place.
Now firmly entrenched in his general manager’s office, the pressure is on for Feaster to once again have a strong draft after selecting Baertschi, NCAA standout John Gaudreau, WHL playoff MVP Laurent Brossoit and others at the 2011 draft.

In a column in Friday's Calgary Herald, the venerable George Johnson mentioned that the Flames have been rather mum about the coaching search, theorizing that they're waiting for the New York Rangers to be bounced from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The reasoning being that Rangers assistant coach Mike Sullivan It's not a bad theory.
