FGD: Crucial Stretch

If I'm being honest with myself, I don't really see the Calgary Flames falling out of the playoff hunt between now and the NHL's trade deadline at the end of the month. Even with upcoming games against the likes of the Sharks and Canucks, I still see Calgary remaining within striking distance of eighth in the Western Conference. That said, they start a three game road trip tonight in Anaheim that could prove to be very important (8 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

While the Chicago Blackhawks ran things at times in the first period on Friday night, the Calgary Flames were able to limit the damage fairly effectively and finished the opening frame even at a goal a piece. That allowed them to use a strong final 40 minutes, which helped them to a solid 3-1 win over the suddenly struggling Chicago Blackhawks. It snapped a three game home losing streak for the Flames and got them back within three points of a playoff spot.

Three nights ago, the Calgary Flames had every single team battling with them for a playoff spot lose in regulation, but were unable to pounce on their prime opportunity to close a gap in the Western Conference. While sitting idle last night, the out of town scoreboard was basically as good as they could hope for, presenting another opportunity for the Flames. Calgary welcomes Chicago tonight for the final meeting of the season between the two teams (7 pm, TSN and Sportsnet 960).

Just like the rest of the NHL, the Calgary Flames put their pants on one leg at a time. However, when they've got their pants on, the Flames just aren't scoring a lot of goals. Save for a six goal outburst against a dreadful Oilers opponent, Calgary has managed just five regulation goals in their last five games. The good news? They got points in three of those games. The bad news? They'll need a little more tonight against the red hot Red Wings (7 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

When you're generating as little offensively as the Calgary Flames have of late, there are going to be nights where allowing even one goal is going to be too much. Such was the case Tuesday night, as the Flames fell to the San Jose Sharks 1-0 in their final game prior to the All Star break. While they continue to do a good job limiting the opposition, they're just not generating enough to put up wins at a sustainable pace.
