The Calgary Flames have the fifth-best odds to win the NHL's Draft Lottery on Saturday night. After a disappointing season, seeing the team draft in the top three would be a nice consolation prize, as unlikely as it is. So what happens if the Flames win the lottery? What are their options if they get into the top three? And what's the best way to go if the most likely scenarios (them not drafting in the top three) play out?

One of the questions we often ask when evaluating players is, "does he make those around him better?". It's one of the most sought after qualities in the sport, but also one of the hardest to quantify. My assertion over the last number of years has been that Calgary's Mikael Backlund does just that, never more so than the last two seasons specifically.
Well, now I've got some proof that drives it home: Backlund truly does elevate those around him.

With great fanfare, the Calgary Flames added a pair of new players to the roster in the span of about a week last summer. While Dougie Hamilton and Michael Frolik led the way among new faces for the Flames, they weren't the only ones to spend their first seasons with the organization in 2015-16.
With so many negatives this past season, let's focus on some of Calgary's bright spots. All three new acquisitions we'll touch on here qualify as positive stories for me.

With Calgary's soon to be confirmed signing of Czech product Daniel Pribyl, many of us have become very curious about the 23-year-old winger. Just what are the Flames getting in the former sixth round pick of the Habs? At this point, no one knows for sure how Pribyl might translate to the NHL, but we do have some recent examples to compare him to. As I see it, this could go one of three ways.

Most of us are aware of the salary cap situation the Calgary Flames are going to find themselves in this summer. With contract extensions pending for leading scorers Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, the Flames are very quickly going to find themselves in a cap crunch with difficult decisions to make. As such, Calgary is going to be looking for contracts to move this summer to give them more flexibility for next season and beyond. I've got a few ideal candidates that fit the bill after the jump.
