The Calgary Flames just completed their longest road trip of the season, playing six games in nine nights in the Eastern Conference. With a record of 3-2-1, the Flames earned seven of a possible 12 points and return home one game closer to the .500 mark than when they left.
Three things jumped out at me during Calgary's excursion, two negative and one positive.

Calgary Flames fans were elated when Matthew Tkachuk fell to the team at number six overall in June's NHL Draft, and for good reason. Tkachuk was coming off a banner season with the OHL's London Knights, filled an organizational need for the Flames, and in his on-ice personality, brought the team something they didn't have. I thought Tkachuk had a chance to make Calgary's roster out of training camp, but by no means did I see him making the type of impact he has to this point.

As our friends south of the border enjoy their holiday long weekend, many in the hockey world will be looking at American Thanksgiving in a different context. As the theory goes, teams in a playoff spot around this time have a very strong chance of making the playoffs while teams on the outside are statistically unlikely to climb their way back in.
So just how accurate is this theory? And what does it mean for the Calgary Flames?

The first quarter of the 2016-17 season for the Calgary Flames has been tough to swallow. They're well below .500, they can't get out of their way on special teams, and highly paid star players are playing underwhelming hockey.
I take calls and read texts after every Flames game and follow along as best I can on social media, and I can tell you there's been plenty of handwringing over Calgary's decision to fire Bob Hartley in May. Did the Flames make the right call? For me there's a very definitive answer.

One of the more surprising and positive things we've seen in the early stages of the season is the performance of Matt Stajan. With a lot of people questioning his role on the team heading into training camp, Stajan has done a nice job silencing those critics for the time being thanks to a stellar start to his 2016-17 campaign.
Stajan has been one of Calgary's most consistent performers through 10 games and I think he's deserving of some recognition.
