The Phoenix Coyotes may be the hottest team in the NHL, going 8-0-1 over their last nine games, helping them open up a four point playoff cushion. Now seventh in the conference, the Coyotes roll into Calgary for the first time this season as they get set for their second meeting this season with the Flames (7 pm, Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet 960). A win tonight for Calgary can launch Calgary back into a postseason spot.

An absolutely terrible evening saw the Calgary Flames fall 6-1 to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night at the Saddledome, a game that was ran by the visitors from start to finish. Even after scoring the first goal of the hockey game and being fortunate to be even after one period of play, the Flames let their provincial rivals go to town as the Oilers snapped a nine game losing streak to Calgary in the process.

Ahh yes, the old Battle of Alberta thing that has one city snoring. While we have seen one lopsided battle involving the Calgary Flames undergo a mild reversal of fortunes this season (two straight Flames wins over Vancouver), there's nothing saying Calgary's rivalry with Edmonton is primed to do the same thing. The Flames have won nine straight games against the Edmonton Oilers heading into this season's fifth round of battle (7 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

This weekend's recall of goaltender Henrik Karlsson and subsequent assignment of Leland Irving to Abbotsford had many wondering what exactly the Calgary Flames were thinking. Over the past months since Karlsson's injury in Vancouver, Irving has proven himself more than capable as an NHL backup and has given the team a consistent chance to win, something Karlsson hasn't done as consistenly. There is little argument Irving gives the team the best chance to win when Miikka Kiprusoff needs a rest, so, why has he been demoted to the American Hockey League?

We know how the Calgary Flames are doing it, but yet...we kind of don't know how. Riding the spectacular goaltending of Miikka Kiprusoff, and his fourth shutout this season, the Flames were able to use a third period goal from Mike Cammalleri to take a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings and officially move into a playoff spot for the first time this season. It's exciting to see despite another, um, punchless effort for Calgary. They've now got points in eight straight games.
