The Calgary Flames played one of, if not their best, first period of the season and carried over some good things into the second period, and it was enough to take a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night. While their final frame wasn't the picture of perfection, they staved off a chasing opponent and closed out their third win of the season. With two games to go on a six game homestand, it was a big win for the Flames.

After three games of their season high six game home stand, the Calgary Flames have had very average results. They sit 1-1-1 on the trip after opening with a comeback win over the Edmonton Oilers last Tuesday night. Now, looking to snap a two game losing skid, the Flames welcome the Northwest Division leading Colorado Avalanche to the Saddledome for their first meeting of the season, looking to get this home stretch back on a positive track (8 pm, Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet 960).

As they continue a six game homestand, the Calgary Flames get to work early with an afternoon affair against the Nashville Predators (2 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960). After a 3-2 overtime loss on Thursday, the Flames have points in both games to open the home stint and take on a Preds team coming off two really poor performances, falling to the Oilers and the Canucks.

It was pretty fitting a game lacking in a ton of high quality chances would finish in overtime, and that's exactly what happened on Thursday night as the New York Rangers topped the Calgary Flames 3-2 in extra time. All the regulation scoring happened in the first period until the visitors scored in the expiring seconds of the overtime period. The loss keeps Calgary one game below the .500 mark.

One of the most tenuous Calgary Flames issues this summer surrounded the team not signing end eventually trading former first round pick Tim Erixon. He's now a member of the New York Rangers and he'll be in the lineup tonight when the Blueshirts make their only visit to Calgary this season (7:30 pm, TSN and Sportsnet 960). It's game two of a six game homestand for the Flames, which they started on the right foot Tuesday night.
