So here we are, the Calgary Flames sit two points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with nine games to go this season. It's funny, though, after all the negative calls I've take on The FAN 960's Overtime, the Flames are still in much the same place they were to start the post-Olympic schedule. And if recent history is any indication, it's probably where they'll be for the rest of the season.

The Calgary Flames get set for the San Jose Sharks tonight in another crucial game in their bid to remain in the Western Conference playoff hunt. Now, with 12 games remaining this season, the injuries start to pile up a little more than perhaps the Flames and their fans would like.

It's the biggest game of the season (we all know that), against a team the Calgary Flames have yet to beat this season. That's why some find it odd to see the Calgary Flames start Vesa Toskala in net over Miikka Kiprusoff tonight in Denver.

Where does Backlund fit?

Calgary Flames v Ottawa Senators

I know that Kent here at FlamesNation and a few others have wondered about the decision to not have Mikael Backlund in the Calgary Flames lineup the last three games, and to instead dress Craig Conroy. It's an interesting debate, because Backlund is a player who has shown he can be a useful player at this level. But the question is, if the coaching staff isn't going to use him, should he remain at this level?
