It's not an April Fools Day joke. The Calgary Flames really are back in this thing, and they really could be tied for a playoff spot come Saturday morning. But that assumes they go out and play the type of hockey they need to, which hasn't been a guarantee this season. Let's see what's going on here and elsewhere.

Here we are, game-day number 77 for the Calgary Flames as they get set to take on the Phoenix Coyotes. We all know the situation is dire for the hometown heroes, and yesterday I did up a piece examining the Magic Numbers for the teams Calgary is chasing, and the Elimination Number as it stands for Calgary. So let's set things up, shall we?

Well, this is probably not in the best interests of Flames Nation credibility, but I'll try it anyway. Even though Kent is our resident math expert, I've taken a stab at the whole "Magic Number" idea, as the Calgary Flames enter the final 6 games of the regular season.

I am at a complete loss to get my head around the Calgary Flames this season. Here we are, with six games remaining, and I can tell you nothing about what this team is or isn't. This act that the Flames have put on throughout the season is what's responsible for a desperate run to the end of the season, where the playoffs are anything but certain.

So here we are, the Calgary Flames sit two points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with nine games to go this season. It's funny, though, after all the negative calls I've take on The FAN 960's Overtime, the Flames are still in much the same place they were to start the post-Olympic schedule. And if recent history is any indication, it's probably where they'll be for the rest of the season.
