Predicting how many points a player will score is tricky business. Even the new Vukota system, which has already been regarded as the best, is off by 0.14 points per game on average – or 11.5 points over an 82 game season.
That's why I like the Snepsts System, which since it was first introduced in 2009 over at Hockey Prospectus, projects how many points a player will score by searching NHL's vast history to find players with similar scoring trends. While it's no more accurate than the Vukota system over-all, it offers up a range of historical probabilities, offering us the opportunity to decide for ourselves where a particular player will fall, depending on their individual circumstances.

With Sidney Crosby's hockey career hanging in the balance because of concussions and Marc Savard's apparently over, the NHL's overdue decision to address headshots in the game is a classic case of being a day late and a dollar short.

Ex-Flame and Leaf enforcer Wade Belak was reportedly found dead in his Toronto condo this afternoon. The 35-year old recently retired from hockey.
Belak's death marks the third tragic passing of an NHL tough guy this summer after Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien. The cause of his death has yet to be reported, but whatever it is, this has truly been one of the saddest offseasons in NHL memory.
More to come as details emerge. For now, sincere condolences to Belak's friends and family.

Yes, last season was a roiling pot of change, disappointment and entirely diametrically opposed outcomes. And, in the end, the Flames near mythical rebound failed to launch them into the post season, marking it the second time in as many years the capped-out club missed the dance.
