Highlights
The Flames beat the Canucks kids/hopefuls yesterday in both games, 3-2 at home and 3-1 in Vancouver. I missed the action for both owing to some cable confusion, but the gamethread below has some on-the-fly observations for those looking for re-caps. Other thoughts and such are welcome in the comments.
Luckily, the NHL kept the stats for the games last night, so here are some items of interest:

Today is the first day we will see NHL players doing their jobs in a competitive format since last June, and it's been considerably longer than that since we saw anyone do it in a Flames jersey. Whether that's a good or bad thing remains to be seen, I suppose, but as far as the competition goes, well, you may want to temper your excitement.

As the Calgary Flames get set for the Vancouver Canucks in a split squad affair tonight, here's what we can tell you. I think everybody gets the concept now, one game in Calgary (7 pm, FAN 960 and Sportsnet Flames) and one game in Vancouver (8 pm). But we can also give you a little more as to what you'll see, specifically at the Dome this evening.

The Flames begin the preliminary phase of the season with a pair of encounters against the Canucks, and while the pre-season has merely been a place for the veterans to ease in to things for past clubs, this fall might actually see an expensive player have a meeting with the Turk. That decision is still a few weeks out, though, so this evening will mostly act as a last chance for a few marginal types to get a game in the Flaming C before being sent away.

I managed to catch a large portion of the Flames intra squad game this afternoon. Here are some of my thoughts and obseervations in no discernable order:
- The speed and intensity for what was a largely meaningless scrimmage was up there. It was, for example, far more interesting than the NHL all-star game (but what isn't right?). Nobody was taking a day off this afternoon and that included the vets.
