Red and White Game Observations

I managed to catch a large portion of the Flames intra squad game this afternoon. Here are some of my thoughts and obseervations in no discernable order:
- The speed and intensity for what was a largely meaningless scrimmage was up there. It was, for example, far more interesting than the NHL all-star game (but what isn't right?). Nobody was taking a day off this afternoon and that included the vets.

Hockey is just that much closer with the opening of camp today, and it appears from a distance that the Alberta weather is providing a proper atmosphere for the proceedings. At any rate, in this week's review of what was, the Flame youngsters finish their work in the Okanagan, the big kids report for work absent one significant figure, and the RFAs of note get contracts finalized.

Training camp is officially underway at the Saddledome with on ice sessions starting Saturday morning. Group A skated in the early session and consisted of mostly veterans with a few prospects mixed in. The second group was the opposite with most prospects and a few vets sprinkled in.

Now that the kids have been sorted, the real thing can begin this week. The Flames have posted their A and B rosters featuring 24 skaters each and 5 goalies total. The team designations are meaningful, as group A features mostly NHLers and veteran AHLers (including Cam Cunning and Mikael Backlund). Group B, on the other hand, is all kids and hopefuls, including new guys Steffan Meyer (D), JP Lamoreaux (G) and try-out Giffen Nyren (D).

It's not understating it to say Flames prospect goalies Leland Irving and Matt Keetley are both entering the most important season of their young pro careers. A consistent and positive year for either or both players would obviously raise their stock within the organization. However, another campaign similar to last year will bring them to a crossroads with the only pro organization they've ever known. For both tenders, now is the time to impress.
