Mikael Backlund headlines the list of players taking the ice starting Monday afternoon at the Saddledome, as the Calgary Flames get set for their annual development camp. With 32 players attending, it's a chance to see exactly where the Flames feeder system is at, and what we might be able to look forward to.

We've talked plenty around these parts about the summer the Flames have had thus far, but it seems like a good time to peruse the activities of Calgary's Northwest brethren since season's end.

Calgary (Domebeers.com) – After weeks of speculation and tense negotiation, Darryl Sutter finally has his man. In a move that will both stun and surprise Flame fans, Ian White was signed to a long term contract today, avoiding a potentially messy arbitration hearing.

It was a meeting of the ages, as for the second time, FlamesNation superstar Kent Wilson joined FlamesNation...guy...Pat Steinberg on Fan 960 airwaves. It happened at the fateful time of 1:45 pm Thursday afternoon, and the gold standard of radio was set for years to come.
None of that is true, other than Kent joining me Thursday, but it's the second of many more radio hits to come.

Another lovely week of summer has passed. Ah, sorry, I keep forgetting that many of you live in Calgary, where you're merely on your 4th or 5th iteration of spring before fall shows up in a few weeks. Apologies. At any rate, there was actual news of sorts this week, so we'll look at the Kovy shenanigans, Simon Gagne's move to the Gulf Coast, and the Preds' attempt to put Boots in the rear view mirror.
