In Defense of David Moss

In the wake of a disappointing season, a lot of Flames players have become targets for fan angst - some deservedly, others not-so-much. David Moss has become one such target for a variety of reasons.
Perhaps primary amongst them is the fact that he just isn't all that compelling a player upon inital inspection. A former seventh rounder with mostly nominal counting stats under his belt, Moss isn't overly big, can't skate all that fast and doesn't have an impressive shot. He's a player that can fade into the background of many a game.

Last time around, I had a look at Robyn Regher's 09/10 by 5v5 scoring chances. Today, Jay Bouwmeester gets his turn under the lens. It was a difficult first season in the Red and Black for the Flames' prize free agent catch, with his boxcars falling off the planet. He shot about 2% for the season, though, and since shooting percentages do fluctuate, I still wanted to see how the club's scoring chance numbers looked when he was patrolling the blue.

Both Pat Steinberg and Robert Cleave have made reference to Flames scoring chances recently. For those unaware, I took it upon myself to count scoring chances* last season and managed to tally 72 of Calgary's 82 games, with the results of each individual contest documented here. My efforts were part of a larger project shared by a number of bloggers around the net and will likely continue and expand going forward.

As part of FN's review of the scoring chance data from last season, I'll be taking a look at the Flames' two top defenders this week. An examination of Robyn Regehr's 5v5 results by that metric will be covered in this installment, with Jay Bouwmeester's results reviewed in the next couple of days.
With that noted, on to Reggie. The Flames' long-standing tough minutes rearguard had two primary partners during 09/10, and there was some talk about improved play by the brawny Brazilian after the Phaneuf trade. That said, I'm the sort that prefers that the numbers do the talking.

Recently, I was lucky enough to convince Justin Goldman* of the Goalie Guild to share some of his thoughts on new Flames goalie prospect Henrik Karlsson.
