Flames 2012 First Round Targets: Pontus Aberg

As usual this season a number of Swedish skaters dominate the top-end of the European prospects rankings. At the top of the list are Filip Forsberg, who is expected to be a top-5 selection, and Sebastian Collberg, whom we have previously profiled and is expected to land anywhere from 10-15. Pontus Aberg is the third of the "big three" Swedish forwards at this year's draft, although he tends to show up well back of the other two on many lists. The NHLNumbers list had him at 18, Collberg at 13 and Forsberg at 2.

The funny thing is, Aberg was by far the most effective scorer of the trio this season.

Martin Gelinas returns to Calgary

When new head coach Bob Hartley went to look for a new member of his coaching staff, he didn't look very far. On Thursday afternoon, the Calgary Flames officially announced that former NHLer (and former Flame) Martin Gelinas was joining the club as an assistant coach.

The Flames Fifteen: #6 - Roman Horak

Roman Horak was traded to Calgary a little over a year ago along with two second round picks in the draft (Markus Granlund and Tyler Wotherspoon) from the New York Rangers, and at the time not much was being praised about the return for the Flames blue chip prospect, Tim Erixon. As the anger subsided and more people began to learn more about the new youngster, there grew a sense of optimism; especially given the history of how he played with another (then) highly touted prospect, Ryan Howse.

Once upon a time, the Calgary Flames used to draft big, mean, Western Canadian defenders. Dion Phaneuf. Matt Pelech. Gord Baldwin. John Negrin. One by one, though, these men were sent away and the Flames adopted a different strategy, drafting mobile, puck-moving defenders like Tim Erixon and T.J. Brodie. (Erixon was also sent away.)

Report: Gelinas to join Flames as assistant coach
