Here at FlamesNation, one of the things we do is count scoring chances for each and every Calgary Flames game. One reason is that they can give you a general sense of how a team's playing even more than tools like shots, Fenwick or Corsi can. Those stat treat all shots and shot attempts equally, whether they're a 90 foot lob from the neutral zone or a hard areas chance in the slot.
Scoring chances cut through all that. In theory, they're a really good way of seeing who's driving play for the Calgary Flames, and who's leaking chances like a boat.
Here's how things look for your hometown heroes through 58 games at even-strength.

When Dean "Boomer" Molberg, of the Sportsnet 960 morning show, asked frequent guest and CBC insider Elliotte Friedman to name a team he thought were right in the thick of things regarding the Mike Cammalleri sweepstakes, Friedman stunned the host with his answer: the New Jersey Devils.
It's not that a trade to the Devils was inconceivable or anything, it's just that no one had really considered them to be contenders in the hunt for the talented winger prior to Friedman's suggestion. The idea, still, is an odd one for me to digest. I don't really see it being a good fit for either team on the surface, but nonetheless, let's break the situation down.

After basically two weeks without National Hockey League action, the games begin again in drips and drabs over the next couple days, then in earnest on Thursday with 12 contests - including the 59th game of the season for the Calgary Flames as they host the LA Kings.
For the Flames, Thursday night kicks off a section of the schedule - the final section, mind you - that features 24 games in 46 days. There will be four sets of back-to-backs in that schedule, and by sheer coincidence there are 12 home games left and 12 road games. It's a veritable sprint to the finish.
