Flames Next Steps - Functional Toughness

Season 1 of the official Calgary Flames rebuild was, by many measures, a success. The club was competitive on most nights but finished low enough to guarantee a high caliber prospect in the upcoming draft. We saw the emergence of potential new core pieces in Mikael Backlund, TJ Brodie, Mark Giordano and Sean Monahan, while many of the organization's hopefuls (including Johnny Gaudreau, Jon Gillies, Joni Ortio, Markus Granlund, Max Reinhart, Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk) had very strong seasons in their respective leagues.

1. Signing Wolf

So the Calgary Flames made quick work of further shoring up the team's contract pool (or, if you prefer, taking away a contract slot from someone else) by signing David Wolf out of Germany. A very Flames-y signing, and an inauspicious way to start the Brad Treliving era.

Much Ado About Brian McGrattan

One of the biggest enigmas surrounding the Calgary Flames has been Brian McGrattan.

Acquired from the Nashville Predators last year in exchange for minor-league defender Joe Piskula - and promptly signed to a two-year extension that runs through next season - McGrattan has developed a reputation as a tough customer and a great teammate.
