Recall my earlier article back in August about the changing world of sports journalism and something I had remarked on in regards to the misconception amongst some in the media about the intention of advanced analytics. Here is what I wrote: Nobody, at least not a single person I can find, is suggesting that advanced analytics should be used as a sole source for all hockey decisions. Instead, they are being suggested as a complement to aid in separating the signal from the noise, when it comes to reviewing games or making player asset decisions.
Well, in the spirit of the season (training camp and roster projections, that is) I decided to try and do just that. I’m going to draw up a roster made up entirely of some of the strongest players in various advanced stats categories, and keep it all under the current salary cap, and see what sort of team we end up with. The purpose of this is to illustrate what a numerically-chosen roster might look like and offer up some real names that we can then discuss.

The Calgary Flames crept into the Mile High City on Sunday night, visiting a desperate, winless Colorado Avalanche squad. After a hard-fought 60 minute effort featuring some superb netminding, the Flames flew home having steadied their pre-season record at the .500 mark (3-3-0), while the Avalanche dropped to 0-4-1 following a 2-1 win for the visitors.

The Calgary Flames have cut down their roster significantly and now, it's back to action. And what better way to kick off the back half of their pre-season schedule than with Jarome Iginla's first game with the Avalanche against the team he represented for the better part of a decade and a half? In the pre-season, with no TV and fanfare.
The Flames (2-3-0) now boast a sub-.500 record in the pre-season, but they have gotten some nice performances. The Avalanche (0-3-1) haven't won a pre-season game yet, and seem to be icing a roster that pushes hard for one.
Game time is 6pm. No TV, but your pals at Sportsnet 960 The Fan have the call, as always.

We're just over half-way through training camp! The Flames have 57 bodies in camp as of this writing and have to get down to 23 bodies by the October 7 at 3pm MT.
With 10 days and 4 pre-season games to go, along with a bunch of injuries, how are things looking right now? Here's a quick look as we wait for cuts, in order of how likely a player is to make the team right now.
