The conference tournaments are behind us now, so now the last leg of college hockey is upon us: the NCAA's Frozen Four tournament.
Brackets were announced this morning. Here's where the Flames kids, including Johnny Gaudreau, fit in.

This night of nights, this game of games, is the sweetest of victories for your fightin' Flames as it comes against our perennially pathetic polar ... poo-heads from the North. It's not that the Flames won big, in Edmonton, it's that the game was just so fun to watch for so many different reasons. Including a Taylor Hall/Dallas Eakins "mis-communication" which looked an awful lot like a cat fight.
The Flames turned the second period into a highlight package and scored EIGHT TIMES. IN ONE GAME. AGAINST THE OILERS. One of them by Kevin Westgarth, the Brick Tamland of hockey. Drink it in Flames fans, this game is ties the largest margin of victory in a BOA and this may have been the most unexpected of Flames big wins in Edmonton. We can worry about the draft lottery and tanking and the rebuild tomorrow. For right now, this feels great.
Best game ever.

Ladies and gentlemen, tonight is the fifth meeting of the season (and 214th meeting overall) between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers. It's their last meeting until next season, too. I'd say the season series is up for grabs, as each team has won twice - the road team always won - but the Flames needed overtime in both wins at Rexall. The Flames need a win to tie the season series in terms of points earned.
That's about as far as this game goes in terms of "significance."
Calgary has 63 points and 12 games left. Edmonton has 59 points and 11 games left. The gap can close considerably with an Edmonton win, while a Calgary win probably cements their draft placement.

That weird noise you just heard? That was a loud sigh coming from the Fraser Valley, as the Calgary Flames have re-assigned goalie Joni Ortio back to the AHL's Abbotsford Heat.

The Flames came into this weekend in grave danger of playing themselves out of the NHL's bottom five with a pair of wins. If their goal was to maintain a strong draft position, well, mission accomplished. They dropped a 6-5 decision to the visiting Nashville Predators in a game that was uncharacteristically sloppy, uneven and featured 11 goals.
And weirdly, it may have been the lowest-event 11-goal game you ever did see, especially with stretches in the first and third that greatly resembled the prior low-event Preds/Flames wars of the past.
