He's Craig Conroy. He's played in 497 career games with the Calgary Flames, and tonight he'll be honored for playing game number 1000 of his NHL career. The Avs are a team I beat up on a lot last year. I took aim at them because their results weren't commensurate with their underlying numbers: it seemed no matter how often they were outshot or outchanced, they found some way to win. Add in the fact that their roster was not only cheap but young and you have the recipe for what should be a bottom-feeder club. And yet, they made the playoffs.

The Flames have got the season mostly headed in the right direction at the moment, so it's as good a time as any for a review of matters in Calgary and elsewhere. In this edition of the round-up, the Battle of Alberta gets entirely too competitive last night, the Avalanche are waiting for news from the medical ward, and the Devils have problems beyond the Kovalchuk matter.

That was the total opposite of pretty, as the Calgary Flames were able to pull one of their behind and eventually skate to a 5-4 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Alex Tanguay scored the winner on a gorgeous roof shot to seal a game where Calgary held a three goal lead late in the second period.
