Lost in all the free agent hustle and bustle is that, as July 1 arrives, Flames captain Jarome Iginla is eligible to sign a contract extension with the Calgary Flames. A veteran of almost 1,200 NHL contests and one of a select few to score 500 goals and 1,000 points, Iginla's also the second-longest tenured captain in the NHL (behind Daniel Alfredsson).
All of these factors will play into his next contract.
Precisely whose contract figures we can compare Iginla to is tricky, as quite frankly, there's nobody with comparable numbers in the league except maybe Alfredsson.

With the acquisition of Jiri Hudler yesterday, there’s been a lot of hemming and hawing about how good he actually is. Are his goals and underlyings merely a result of being on a very very good Detroit team? Or was he helping drive the engine of that Detroit team and other players benefited from him?

Lost a bit in all the other news over the weekend was the departure of long time Flame David Moss. The oft-injured but always effective winger signed in Phoenix for $4 million over two years. At 30-years old and always a bad hit away from the infirmary, it made some sense for the Flames to seek other options on the right side. Still, the team will miss his uncanny ability to move the puck in the righr direction every night.

Calgary sat out the first day of unrestricted free agency, which wasn't a surprise given all of their earlier activity. With dwindling cap space and roster spots, Calgary is pretty close to finishing off their 2012-13 opening day line-up.
