FGD: Playing Out the String?

With just four games remaining this season, and things looking very bleak for the Calgary Flames, many believe these final contests are just a formality.  While there is very little hope of the Flames being postseason bound, they aren't mathematically eliminated at this point, which means there's no excuse for them to play like a team going through the motions.  Tonight, they play game 79 against a St. Louis Blues team relishing their role as spoiler (6 pm, Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet Radio FAN 960).

Celebrating Daymond Langkow

About six months ago I was planning on penning a piece like this, except as a eulogy for Langkow's career, cut tragically short by an unfortunate injury. All the signs pointed to Daymond Langkow never playing hockey again - each attempt at a comeback was met with a significant regression, to the point he wasn't even skating mid-season.

Ales Kotalik Back to the Farm

Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald is reporting that Ales Kotalik has once again been sent to Abbotsford. The $3M boat anchor had a nice game against the Oilers upon his return, but has been noticeably invisible since.

Flames Sign Joni Ortio

The Flames recently announced they signed former 6th round pick Joni Ortio. The 19-year old has spent his time bouncing around various junior and pro leagues in Finland since he was drafted in 2009, so his results are all over the place. This year, he's appeared primarily with TPS of the SM-liiga league (Finnish Elite League) and managed a .910 SV% in 15 games.

Postgame: The End

In their final game this season against a team within their reach, the Calgary Flames saw their season all-but-mathematically slip away against a team they just couldn't beat all season.  Corey Perry showed why he's in the Hart Trohpy conversation, leading the way in a 4-2 Anaheim Ducks win over the Flames.  Needing to win out down the stretch was not the ideal situation, but it's the situation they were in...and not surprisingly, that didn't happen.
