Training camp is in full swing, and that means that the proper business of hockey is underway, so a review of some of the news around the league is in order. In this week's go-round, the Flames get the roster down to a more reasonable configuration, the Jets have a noisy start to their exhibition campaign, and Brendan Shanahan has a full plate three nights in to the pre-season.

Brent Sutter and Jay Feaster reduced the training camp clutter today, cutting some 19 players. Most aren't terribly surprising, with a huge bulk of the guys being assigned to Abbotsford.

Pat Steinberg has a good overview of the Flames home game here. Unlike him, though, I wasn't at the Saddledome rubbing shoulders with the important people. Instead I stayed at home and switched between internet feed and SNET broadcast so I could catch as much action as possible.

I'll leave our FlamesNation commenters to fill in the blanks on Calgary's second game of preseason opening night, as I was able to watch the Flames take a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks in split squad action at the Saddledome. In the second half, Calgary took on the Canucks at the Rogers Arena. In both instances, Vancouver iced a very pedestrian lineup against a more veteran team; the game at the 'Dome saw that veteran squad carry the play as expected.

Just like last year, the Calgary Flames open their preseason with a split squad affair with the Vancouver Canucks, with games at the Saddledome and Rogers Arena (7pm, Sportsnet Radio FAN 960/8 pm, Sportsnet West). Neither team Vancouver is sending is what you'd call stacked, however the team they're sending to Calgary certainly isn't rife with tenured NHLers.
