The month of October is a curious one for the Calgary Flames, as they opened their season Saturday against a non-conference opponent and follow that with three games on the road, two more against teams from the East. Following that, Calgary spends the rest of the tenth month at the Saddledome, with a six game homestand carrying them past All Saints Day. This afternoon, the Flames start a three game trip in St. Louis (12 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

The season opening woes continued Saturday for the Calgary Flames, as an absolutely dismal second period was enough to sink the home team 5-3 at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The middle 20 minutes, with a few tacked on either side, was as dominant a performance from a visiting team I've seen at the Saddledome in ages. Unfortunately for Calgary, a late rally was too little, too late as the Flames have lost eight of their last nine season openers.

It's that time again. Flames face the Crosby-less Penguins tonight. That sounds like a boon, but this is the club that managed 100+ points without both Sid the Kid and Malkin in the line-up for large portions of the season last. Pittsburgh has some of the biggest names in the game, but that sometimes overshadows the fact that they have one of the strongest overall squads in the league from top-to-bottom.
No easy win tonight, even with Crosby on the sidelines.
