As we all decompress from the wild show that was last night's 3-2 shootout loss in Vancouver, and prepare for the Flames to clash with a very impressive San Jose Sharks club, why not take a quick glance at what's going on around these parts.

Brian Burke: Let's Make a Deal!

*The above photo is Brian Burke at the draft with Chris Pronger, a defenseman Burke believed in strongly enough to trade up in the draft order to acquire...hint hint

Amongst NHL media and fans there is the general belief that Brian Burke is one of the best GMs in the league when it comes to trades, specifically that he is better capable of stealing quality talent out of an organization than many or most of his peers.

Being the iconoclastic contrarian that I am, I decided I’d take a look into this to determine whether this was indeed true, and if so to what extent and based on what factors. I also wanted to look further into Burke's history as a GM and determine where he ranks amongst his peers in the league.

Sometimes a game is just a game. Sometimes it's just three periods of guys fighting over two points in the standings. When one of the teams is as deep down in the standings as the Calgary Flames are, those games sometimes become routine for all involved.

Happy Hockey Day in Canada! Although it may not be so happy at around 8:30 MST when the Flames will have already started playing the Vancouver Canucks, but for now, the mood is jolly and hockey-ey.

The Canucks are reeling, having lost three in a row including a shattering at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks, 9 to 1. Vancouver, however, have been strong at Rogers Arena this year and will also receive a jolt in the lineup tonight with the return of Alex Burrows from a broken jaw. It's really no matter for the Flames though, who are just thankful to be out of the Scotiabank Sattledome, where they've been setting all sorts of records you don't want to set. We'll find out soon enough just how much of a difference being on the road makes for this weary group.

Folks, please provide a warm welcome to guest contributor Annie Erling Gofus (@AnnieErGo), with this profile on former UND forward and current Calgary Flames prospect Corban Knight.

If one were to ask the average American grandmother to describe a hockey player she might say, “big, bruised and mean.” While big and bruised might be accurate, Abbotsford Heat centre and Flames prospect Corban Knight takes the thuggish stereotype and turns it on its head. With a strong connection to family, deep roots in Canada and a pure-and-simple love for the game, it’s tough to find a more passionate player and sincerely nice athlete than Knight.
