After much fenagling, FlamesNation and The FAN 960 are on the draft floor right now.  As Kent has his draft day thread open, I'll be posting everything that I hear and see right here.  Anything we hear on the Flames front will go up as an article on the site right away.  So lets get this thing going!

Draft Day Open Thread

With Pat Steinberg on the scene in LA, expect more updates from the ground as well as on topical analysis from myself and Robert Cleave if (when!) the Flames make a move this weekend.

For now, feel free to use this open thread to discuss rumors, speculate about trades or just simply wail and rend your clothes over the Flames unenviable position.

To get things rollings, I'll make some predictions:

1.) A Flames defender will be dealt this weekend. Ian White or Robyn Regehr for some sort of player + daft upgrade or Adam Pardy for a third rounder.

2.) Sutter will find a way to sneak inside the top 60.

3.) An "extra" forward will be dealt, making room for Chris Higgins to be re-signed.

Let 'er rip folks.

Moving bigger pieces – Value for a few Flames

One of the advantages to moving bodies in the summer is the absence of short term competitive pressure on a GM. As we’ve seen the last two deadlines, Darryl Sutter’s judgement in that scenario left a lot to be desired, and as I noted the other day, he’s done OK moving NHLers at the draft since the lock-out.

The other advantage that a GM normally has is more payroll flexibility, and although Calgary isn’t exactly in that spot at the moment, that doesn’t mean that other teams can’t take on a salary to help improve their team.

As I discussed last week, I suspect that the three players that the Flames want to move have fairly limited trade value. Beyond those players, there are a few Flames that might well be on the move this week, demurrals from the boss aside.

Written by the Nation Network's Special Correspondent at the Draft, Matt Bugg.

LOS ANGELES - As on the ice, the teams that make up the Northwest Division represents both extremes at the draft table. Clubs who do not pick until the 3rd round will attempt to help their teams as much as those with double-digit picks, while emerging and elite teams will attempt to shore up already envious pipelines of talent as others continue to flounder in draft mediocrity. Any given draft can shape a team's future, but just as important as how the Edmonton Oilers do, it's who the other teams in the Northwest select that will shape the vision of future rivalries.

10 Things to Watch For at the Draft

It's quite an exciting time to be a fan of NHL hockey. The NHL  Awards were just handed out, incorrectly (boy, is Henrik's face going to be red when Bettman tells him 'horribly premature April fools!). There is the anticipatory excitement of the NHL free agency period opening July 1st can be felt in the air (I can't wait for the Flames to sign Dean Mcammond!), and of course,  there is the upcoming 2010 NHL Draft. Calgary Flame fans have a lot to look forward to this year, as the team is drafting 13th overall. The team has not drafted this high since the 2003 draft, and it is expected they will be able to acquire a bona fide NHLer. What's that? Oh no, to the Coyotes? For what? Oh, really? My condolences.

Well then, you'll have some time to watch then, won't you, Calgary Flames fan? Here are a few things to watch for as you wait, wait, and wait for Calgary's first draft selection. In the third round.
