The Calgary Flames ended the calendar year the way they needed to: with a win. Three goals in the second period staked them to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche and gives the team three consecutive wins for the first time since October. If the team is going to claw their way back into contention, they have to win games, in whatever fashion...they did that tonight.

I probably don't have to tell you this, but 2010 was not a good year to be a Flames fan.

The Calgary Flames play their first game of the post-Darryl Sutter era tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome as they'll take on the Colorado Avalanche for the third time this season (7 pm, Sportsnet West and The FAN 960). The Flames look for a third straight win against a Northwest Division foe; an opponent coming off an exciting shootout win in Edmonton the night before.

In a departure from recent matters concerning the Flames, we actually get to discuss a real hockey game today, and it's convenient that our old pals the Avalanche are in town, since I suspect a few folks might like to see the Flames emulate Colorado's approach to team building. I'm not quite sure I buy that, but the Denver outfit is an improving team that has given Calgary fits the last year and a half.
