Calgary's month of December is a busy one with a span of 16 games that really could help put their season on track or do the complete opposite. After suffering a 5-1 loss to Vancouver on Sunday night, the Flames have an opportunity to turn this last little stretch into a good one. A win tonight against Carolina could give Calgary points in five of six games, and it's a game the Flames should be expected to win (7 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

With regular back-up Henrik Karlsson out with a sprained MCL, the Flames have called up former first round pick Leland Irving from the Abbotsford Heat. Irving has been the farm club's prohibitive #1 for the last couple of seasons and has started an AHL high 23-games so far this year.

Three very strong games got the Calgary Flames five points, boosting them to exactly where they were last year at this point. Weekly followers of the Black Box know that their goaltending and even-strength play has been reasonable, but they'll need much-improved special teams play and more even-strength offense to get the 73 points in the 57 remaining games (.640, like Chicago and 6 other current teams) to clinch their first play-off berth since Mike Keenan was behind the bench and Mike Cammalleri was their leading goal-scorer.
