When Calgary Flames GM spoke on Friday morning, many were interested in his take on his signing of Olli Jokinen, and how he'd heard only positive response. But as people digested and opined on Sutter's decision to re-sign the former Flame, I was more interested in the GM's take on another center: Daymond Langkow.

Word came down today that Ian White has indeed filed for salary arbitration. This is no surprise around here given the fact that Bob and I engaged in a mock arbitration for White awhile back. I took the Flames side and for those too lazy to read the link - my arguments were a lot tougher to come by. White was fed some of the easiest starting positions in the league by the Maple Leafs last year and it goosed his ES scoring totals to career best heights. The favorable comps for the White camp were many, whilst the negative comps were few.
As such, there's chance final decided upon salary won't really be in Calgary's "favor". The options for the Flames once the arbitrator rules is to accept the deal or walk away, allowing White to become a free agent. Expect Sutter to do the former.

After the flurry of activity this past long weekend, the Flames appear to have their roster more or less set heading into the new season. Appearances may be deceiving, however. According to Cap Geek, Calgary has $1.15M in cap space remaining, with 12 forwards, 7 defenders and two goalies signed. One of those forwards is Ales Kotalik. The back-end lacks Ian White, who remains a restricted free agent.

Now that the dust has settled on yesterday and the madness is over, it's time to take an objective look at the pieces the Flames picked up. I'll endeavor to eject my sour feelings (which I've obviously made quite clear) over the Jokinen debacle in this analysis and let the data do the talking instead. I'll also take stock of the Flames new situation moving forward.

Look, I'm not going to try to put any lipstick on this pig. Olli Jokinen's tenure in Calgary was a complete failure, full stop. His acquisition and subsequent trade bookended a period that one might hope had cured Darryl Sutter from making any rash moves.
