Because nobody ever really wants to go forward with an arbitration hearing and publicly bury one of their players, the Calgary Flames have reportedly come to terms with center Joe Colborne on a new deal.

Revisiting Calgary's Age Gap Conundrum

About a year ago, we spent some time looking at the Flames' age structure.

Back then, the Flames were still somewhat mired in a problem: they had a lot of older players, and a handful of younger players, and not a lot of NHL-ready players in that middle age group. To be successful or, heck, just to survive the aging of your roster, you want to have a reasonably balanced age structure with younger players coming up at a fairly steady rate to spell off your declining and departing veterans.

The Flames have improved a bit in this area just over the past 13 months - through two free agent signing periods and an entire regular season.

2014 Development Camp: Adam Ollas Mattsson

The Calgary Flames have had some great hits and some ugly misses when drafting Swedish players.

The hits are pretty obvious: 2007 first rounder Mikael Backlund and, awhile ago, Hakan friggin' Loob. The misses? There have been quite a few since the 2004-05 lockout: Tim Erixon, and a slew of late-rounders like Per Jonsson, Alexander Deilert and Henrik Bjorklund. So while the Flames once again went to the Swedish well in the 2014 draft, grabbing the towering Adam Ollas Mattsson in the sixth round, you could understand why they hedged their bets a bit.

Ollas Mattsson didn't participate in on-ice at development camp due to injury, but he was available to the media. He comes across amazingly well, particularly because he speaks better English than most of the media honks (this writer included). The youngest player in the Flames system by virtue of his July 1996 birthday, Ollas Mattsson impressed at the World Under-18s and even made his pro debut with Djurgardens as a 17-year-old.

I chatted with him a bit at development camp.

Weekend Open Thread: Build Your AHL Adirondack Depth Chart

The Calgary Flames has a lot of kids battling for jobs at both levels of the organization this upcoming season. While more than a few are going to get a cup of coffee with the big team at some point due to injury and such, the truth there is probably only one or two FT jobs available for the hopefuls. That means an interest roster for the Adirondack Flames.

Calgary's AHL club has lost a few veterans but is also getting an infusion of youngsters, including Bill Arnold, Ryan Culkin, Brett Kulak, Emile Poirier and (maybe) a full season of Patrick Sieloff to boot. Add in sophomores like Corban Knight, Ben Hanowski and John Ramage and you have a pretty decent (but pretty young) roster to work with.

An Open Letter To Curtis Glencross

July 18 2014 11:06AM

Dear Curtis Glencross,

Flames fans.

I'm being told I need to delve deeper into this, so I guess that's what I'll do.

In reference to this interview you gave, Mister Glencross, the one where you're talking about working on a contract extension now for some reason, the one where you go on record saying you're not willing to play for a hometown discount? That one? Yes, we the undersigned have a few issues with it, and if it's okay with you, we'd like to go over them in some detail? Good? Good.
