It only took three signings for Brad Treliving to accomplish his primary goal this summer - get over the NHL's salary floor. That seems like an entirely trivial and underwhelming objective to celebrate, but it's one that had the possibility of causing all sorts of self inflicted wounds. Take, for example, Dale Tallon's orgy of spending from a few summers ago when he signed half of the league's mediocre UFA's to long, bloated contracts. The Flames, conversely, escaped relatively intact. None of the deals were longer than three years and or for a dollar amount that may hamper them in the future. Mission accomplished.
So is there anything left for the club to do this summer?

Hunter Smith is a big, big dude.
When I met him at Calgary Flames development camp earlier this week, I was a bit taken aback at just how big he is. He's listed at 6'7" and 220 pounds, and he's every bit as big as advertised. He's also really excited to be a Calgary Flame, having joined the organization as the team's second second-round selection (54th overall) in June's NHL Draft.
Smith and I had a brief chat after one of the development camp on-ice sessions.

The first wave of free agent signings are done. Depth signings and subsequent moves are probably coming up in the next few weeks as we inch closer and closer to the end of summer and the beginning of camps.
But for now, here's where things stand for the Flames organizationally.

For us prospect honks, it's the most wonderful time of the year. The Calgary Flames' annual development camp continues this week (until Wednesday) at WInsport, giving Flames fans a rare glimpse with all of the team's junior and college prospects together at once.

When the deadline to tender qualifying offers to RFA's passed last week, many of us were disappointed that Paul Byron was not among those given offers by the Flames. That mistake has been rectified.
