Training Camp Wrap: Day 1

Day one of training camp is in the books for the Calgary Flames, with all three groups having gone through their on ice sessions for the day.  The big news surrounded Jarome Iginla who left his Group B session early with back spasms and didn't return.  The feeling is things aren't very serious, so we'll keep an eye on that.  Other than that, the only thing that intrigued me surrounded who was playing with who.

The Buffalo Sabres are spending a lot of money

Terry Pegula came to Buffalo, bringing along money and a vested ownership interest in seeing the local hockey team win. The issue here is whether the Sabres are spending it in the right places.

RFA negotiations have been a bit of a big deal this summer, moreso than usual at least. Because RFA's have limited leverage and a single team holds rights to negotiate with the player, deals are usually all but inevitable if both parties are even passingly interested in getting a contract done.

Flames Comparables: Stajan and Hagman

Every Thursday we're using the Snepsts system to project how many points each of the Flames may score this year.  The Snepsts system, explained over at Hockey Prospectus, searches history for players with similar statistics (adjusted for era scoring levels) and uses their future performance as yardsticks for today's.

Part 1 of our series covered Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay, and Part 2 looked at Olli Jokinen and Lee Stempniak.  This week we'll be looking at Matt Stajan and Niklas Hagman.

Flames Training Camp Primer

With the propsect tournament drawing to a close, the Calgary Flames main camp is right around the corner. Practies and such start this coming weekend while the first exhibition game goes September 20th in a split-squad game in/vs Vancouver. The rest of the pre-season schedule is here.
