Postgame: So That Happened

Aside from the final five minutes of the hockey game, the Calgary Flames played one of their more controlling games of the season on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Unfortunately for the Flames, the final five minutes was enough for them to scuttle all the prior positives as Calgary coughed up a pair of goals and ended up falling 4-3 in a shootout at the hands of the Blue Jackets.

Game 24 - Flames vs Blue Jackets Live Chat

The panic button was firmly pressed by various and sundry in town the last time these two teams faced off. The Flames came out flat against the NHL's lowliest basement dweller and rapidly dug a hole from which there was no escape. The loss was the sort of humiliation Flames fans in weren't prepared to absorb with good humor given the Calgary's own poor start to the season.

The Blue Jackets aren't elite by any means, but the truth is there should be no abnormal stigma attached to losing to them. Not when they have someone aside from Mason in net at least. They are a solidly middling club otherwise with a couple of weapons up front that can do some damage. They're a good goalie and few other minor pieces away from being at least upper-middle class team.

Columbus may have an Islanders-like record, but the BJ's aren't the Islanders in terms of true talent. Their season is cooked because of the awful start, but look for them to post some better numbers in the second half of the year before selling off pieces at the deadline.

The response to Anaheim’s firing of Randy Carlyle has been barely contained glee in many quarters. Over at SBNation’s blog Anaheim Calling, the news was inititally celebrated with an ALL CAPS POST. Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski called the decision to swap Carlyle for Bruce Boudreau (fired on Monday by the Washington Capitals) a “genius move.” Helene Elliott opined that the Ducks had tuned Carlyle out.

However good the reasons may have been for firing Randy Carlyle, the decision does not reflect well on Ducks general manager Bob Murray. How so? I’ll explain.

FGD: Try Again

The first time Calgary played Columbus this year, it ended in a 4-1 win for the Jackets in one of the Flames least inspired performances of the year.  Tonight, Calgary looks for their first three game winning streak of the season when they take on the Blue Jackets at the Saddledome (7 pm, Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet 960).  It's Calgary first of 16 games in the month of December, the busiest single month I can ever remember them playing.
