Welcome to August. The initial excitement and anticipation of the offseason is over, and we’re left only to evaluate. The shocking events and head-scratchers (Carter, Richards, Varlamov etc.) of late June and early July have become old news. August is the time to peel back layers, and take a look beneath the surface.

There are components of management in any profession that are essential. For whatever reason, this foundation can be overlooked in the hockey business. Here, we’ll take a look at the fundamental roles of a manager, especially as it pertains to the Calgary Flames.

JUNGLE B: THE ROAD TO THE NHL

Guns N' Roses released their first album, Appetite for Destruction, on July 21, 1987. It contained one of the greatest dressing room/warm up songs you've ever heard, Welcome To The Jungle. Since 1988, many teams have psyched themselves up listening to Axl and the Boys, but one player actually used the "Jungle" as a springboard to an NHL career.

- You were born in Calgary. What was it like growing up out there?

I was born in Calgary, indeed. But I lived there only for a couple years and moved to the prairies – to Saskatoon. That’s where I learned that I wanted to play hockey.

The middle of summer is not the most exciting time for hockey. Free agency is over and done with – well the exciting parts at least. There’s minor tinkering going on in GM’s offices everywhere and arbitrators are bearing down to make the unbiased decisions that could have drastic repercussions on the state of certain franchises (cough Nashville cough).
