The surprising Halak to St. Louis trade yesterday was marginally relevant to the Flames in that another team now has a solidified starter heading into next season. Jobs will therefore be even harder come by for this year's UFA goalie crop as a result, which should result in more than a couple of quality puck stoppers looking for work later in the summer.

It's come up in both our previous articles on pending Calgary Flames UFA players (done so far: Craig Conroy and Chris Higgins), so I figure he's probably the next logical guy to profile. For the first time in his career, Flames first rounder Eric Nystrom enters free agency, and his return to Calgary is not necessarily guaranteed.

COLUMBUS, OH - JUNE 23: 65th overall pick Oliver Fortier of the Montreal Canadiens and 70th overall pick John Negrin of the Calgary Flames sign autographs during the 2007 NHL Entry Draft at Nationwide Arena on June 23, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

We've profiled many of the significant Flames prospects over the last few weeks. Here's the rest of the pack, albeit in briefer form.

John Negrin, D

Chosen in the third round in 2007, Negrin is a tall, mobile defender who has some (limited) offensive upside. He scored at a decent enough rate in the WHL, including a career high 49 points in his final season, but never put up the kind of numbers that would lead one to suspect he'll be quarterbacking the power play as a pro.

Trade Proposal - With a Twist

One of the underlying issues confronting the Flames this off-season is their shortage of cap space. Presuming the players go for the escalator to the salary cap, Calgary will have just under 6 million dollars of space to sign 6 players. If said players were all fourth-liner/bottom-pairing D types, that would be manageable, but given that Ian White is likely included in that number, the task seems almost out of reach without a move to shed a big-ticket player.

The Flames and Organizational Depth

OTTAWA, ON - JUNE 20: 25th overall pick, Greg Nemisz of the Calgary Flames poses with team personnel after being selected in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place on June 20, 2008 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

TLP's draft post and contributing to Hockey's Future has made it mainfestly obvious to me just how shallow the Flames are at forward. Even with guys like Howse, Wahl, Nemisz and Backlund in the picture, Calgary lags well behind even the median NHL team in terms of skilled, viable youngsters up front.
