Roughnecks: something other than hockey

Yep, even though the Flames aren't in the NHL's postseason dance, the city of Calgary gets some postseason action at the 'Dome in different forms. On the hockey front, they've got the WHL's Eastern Conference Champion Calgary Hitmen, who opened their series with Tri City on Friday night with an absolute thumping (7-0 Hitmen). Or there's the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League, who have a Saturday afternoon playoff date with the Edmonton Rush.

First round second look

Now that 48 hours or so have passed since the conclusion of the first round, a few observations and remarks.

• There has been much pleading for cooler heads to prevail in D.C. in the wake of the Washington Capitals’ collapse against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference’s 1-8 matchup.

On the other hand, it’s possible an attempt to avoid over-reaction may result in under-reaction. Ted Leonsis was chided for his emotional post-series evisceration of the hockey club but the Caps owner may be right to fret, even if he’s giving the wrong reasons to do so.

Flames Sign Bryan Cameron

According to Inside the Flames, Calgary has signed 21 year old Bryan Cameron of the OHL's Barrie Colts. Although he's scored 41, 37 and 53 goals in the last three seasons respectively, the 5'10" center wasn't signed by the Los Angeles Kings, who originally drafted him in the 3rd round in 2007. His 53 goals for the Colts this year not only led the team, but the entire league, which is good news for a Flames organization generally lacking in offensive forwards.

Darryl Sutter: the good

As the NHL playoffs and the offseason for the Calgary Flames continues, the topic of upper management and their future continues to be a hot topic. It's also a topic I've had a hell of a time forming an opinion on, as I've gone back and forth on how I feel about the whole thing. As such, I've tried to really plot out different argument points, and I've decided to trot out a "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" set when it comes to GM Darryl Sutter.
