Flames beat one the best in biz convincingly last game and tonight they meet the bottom of the barrel. While the BJ's record isn't truly indicative of their talent level, Columbus remains one of the West's lesser lights. Carter, Nash, Vermetter and Umberger and worth watching to one degree or another, but the depth falls off quickly from there.
Rookie Ryan Joahansen might be worth a damn some day, but his okay 8 points and +2 in 15 games so far is mostly the bounces - he sports a personal SH% of 18%+ and he's one of the only BJ's with a PDO north of 101. His possession rate is also superficially decent (+9.75/60) but it's mostly due to a zone start of 59.6%. Still might be worth a look.

I had no choice but to use the Coke Christmas polar bears, as we get closer to the festive season; but also because a date with the Blue Jackets must feel just like Christmas for a lot of NHL teams. After beating the league's top team on Friday night, the Calgary Flames start a four game road trip tonight against the league worst Blue Jackets (5 pm, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960).

In today's NHL it's normally wise to keep scoring down. The lower the scoring, the greater the chance for shoot-out or overtime, leading to a lot more so-called loser points (plus a roughly 50% chance of a further point) In fact, if you could arrange to end every regulation game tied you'd earn at least 82 points, plus likely another 41 from what is effectively a statistical coin toss, giving you 123 points and the President's trophy. All of sudden Guy Boucher's trap makes a great deal of sense!

Impossibly, the 2011-12 NHL Season is rapidly closing in on the quarter mark already. Where does the time go?
Lowetide talks with his usual wide assortment of guests his week and the Blackhawks get some time in the hot seat as Jesse Rogers from ESPN Chicago and Sam from Second City Hockey talk about their home team only hours before they got an all world beat down by the Oilers.
Har har har.
