Was it Benjamin Franklin, or possibly even Scott Oake who once uttered that famous phrase: "...but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except refs and offensive zone penalties"?
I'm being told that neither man said anything close to resembling this, but regardless, it's a nice frame for tonight's theme. Your Calgary Flames fall 6-3 to the ridonculously good San Jose Sharks, but despite everything, the Flames possibly might not just a little bit maybe didn't deserve to lose this one.
Although they still did.

There's good news and there's bad news for tonight's 8 pm MT (CBC, SN960) trek into the Shark Tank for a bout with Western Conference leading San Jose Sharks.
The good news is embattled vet Joey MacDonald and his consistently mediocre game will take a seat tonight in favour of the guy we all thought would be the number one this year, Karri Ramo. Ramo somehow lost the starter role for a couple weeks after a decent 35 save performance in a losing effort against Washington in game 1 and was forced to watch MacDonald flop his way to a few wins in the crease since then. He'll be in tough tonight against the league's highest scoring team but I trust him against this high octane Sharks offensive much more than I do MacDonald.
The bad news is, despite an abysmal game in Anaheim and a strongly worded piece calling for his removal off the roster from our overlord Kent, 2012 World Hockey Championship Bronze Medalist Chris Butler remains in the line up tonight. So prepare for another aneurysm filled night of watching Butler play hockey for your Calgary Flames

Six games in and the Flames are not a disaster, to the eternal surprise of many. The Oilers, on the other hand, still look terrible, so we had more than one question about where the two teams will finish relative to each other this season. Ohter topics in this week's Fan Ask include Calgary's ultimate draft position in 2014 and, of course, Sean Monahan.
Let's start with the Flames vs. the Oilers...

Only one thing is certain as debate continues over whether Sean Monahan stays with the Flames past his ninth game or heads back to junior to resume his role as captain of the Ottawa 67s - whatever the Calgary Flames braintrust decides, it will be based on Monahan’s development as a hockey player, and not the team’s financial bottom line. It will have nothing to do with a contract that is at least three years away from being negotiated.

It is technically way too early in the year to be writing something like this. Just six games in, we don't have very much info about anyone on the club. It's entirely possible any of the trends we're seeing right now will reverse themselves over the long-term.
But I don't care. I've seen enough of Chris Butler. Send him packing.
