July 30 News and Notes

Arbitration time is nearly done, so there’s been quite a bit of activity happening around the league. In today’s round-up, the Flames and Ian White beat the hangman, Frolov and Poni find new homes, and…

Best Case Scenario?

It would probably be fair to say that an arbitration hearing is something you want to avoid if possible.  Numerous players have done so this offseason, and Ian White did the same this morning, signing a one year contract with the Calgary Flames worth $2,999,995.  So, the two sides avoid arbitration, which might end up…

Flames sign Ian White (for real, I think)

According to the Fan960, the club and Ian White have agreed to terms on a one year, 2.999M deal. It’s likely right about in the middle of where the two sides would have come into the hearing this morning, because every…

Dev. Camp – Day Three Observations

A truncated afternoon session today filled with line rushes and a brief 4-on-4 scrimmage. The activity was more interesting and more instructive, but at 45 minutes or so, not enough to really watch everyone in question. Some items of interest:

Dev. Camp – Day Two Observations

I limited my viewing to the afternoon session today, so I won’t be commenting on the morning power skating stuff. The guys participated in a number of drills today, mostly end-to-end rushes, break-out formations and cycling drills. Aside from one drill to end the practice (4-on-2’s in split ice) there wasn’t a lot of…

Midway Through

Wednesday on ice sessions have wrapped up as Calgary Flames development camp continues at the Saddledome.  While it’s tough to get an accurate read watching drills and power skating, the FlamesNation crew continues to post their observations.  I’ve got thoughts on Mitch Wahl, Greg Nemisz and Tim Erixon (pictured) after today’s sessions.

Dev. Camp – Day One Observations

I attended both morning sessions for the forwards and defenders today, as well as a good portion of the mixed afternoon practice. Today was more about building some familiarity with the players overall and my observations will build as the week progresses. Obviously one day lacking any sort of game action is a poor…

Flames Nation At Development Camp

Pat Steinberg has already teed things up for the Flames Dev. Camp here. What he failed to mention was that both he and I will be in attendance throughout the week and we’ll endeavor to cover the proceedings from a number of angles. I plan to share my general thoughts from the bleachers while Pat will…

Flames Hire Mental Development Coach Dave Paskevich

According to Rob Kerr, the Flames have added a head shrinker to the club’s subtely changing front office this week. Doctor Dave Paskevich was previously an associate professor of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. You can bet the Flames have interest in Paskevich thanks to the first item in the "current work"…

Development Week

Mikael Backlund headlines the list of players taking the ice starting Monday afternoon at the Saddledome, as the Calgary Flames get set for their annual development camp.  With 32 players attending, it’s a chance to see exactly where the Flames feeder system is at, and what we might be able to look forward…

While you wait for the others…

We’ve talked plenty around these parts about the summer the Flames have had thus far, but it seems like a good time to peruse the activities of Calgary’s Northwest brethren since season’s end.

Calgary (Domebeers.com) – After weeks of speculation and tense negotiation, Darryl Sutter finally has his man. In a move that will both stun and surprise Flame fans, Ian White was signed to a long term contract today, avoiding a potentially messy arbitration hearing.
