Flames v. Stars Postgame: Loser point

Calgary Flames: 3 — Dion Phaneuf, Jarome Iginla, Olli Jokinen

Dallas Stars: 4 — Mike Modano, James Neal, Brad Richards

S/O Winner — Loui Eriksson

The Calgary Flames had a 3-2 lead 5:53 in to the third period, when Rene Bourque took what could only be called a "bone-headed" penalty for a broken stick. All he had to do was drop his stick and there’s no call. Jay Bouwmeester took a boarding penalty thirty-five seconds later and the Stars had a two-man advantage, leading to a Brad Richards goal to tie the game. From there, the Flames and Stars went to a shoot-out and what do you know… the Flames lose making them winless in eight.

I caught part’s of the game on Center Ice at a friend’s place, and it was a fairly physical game. Lots of hitting from both sides, and the Flames looked decent most of the night. A lot of positives from this game…

  • Dion Phaneuf scored his 1st goal in over a month (18 games).
  • Jarome Iginla scored his 1st goal in 12 games.
  • Iginla also got his 466th assist, tying him with Theoren Fleury for 2nd all-time (franchise).
  • Olli Jokinen also scored.
  • The Flames scored 2 PP goals tonight, something they haven’t been able to do in 27 games (Nov. 30).
  • With the Red Wings loss to Minnesota, the "loser point" puts the Flames back into 8th place.

OTHER NOTES:

  • Mike Modano scored his 553rd goal, giving him 1,349 career points, tying Mats Sundin for 25th in league history.
  • Mikael Backlund made his season debut, playing 8:37 on a line with Curtis Glencross and Eric Nystrom. He wasn’t overly noticeable, which is probably a good thing. At this point., you can’t expect him to stand out in a positive way (he isn’t here to save the day), but he wasn’t noticeable in a bad way either.
  • Mark Fistric grabbed Eric Nystrom’s helmet and proceeded to throw a punch with it in hand, hitting Nystrom in the head. He received a match penalty, leaving Dallas with five defenceman for 2 1/2 periods. Take a look…

RANDOM TIDBIT:

Wrestling fans, get ready! It looks as though the "Monday Night Wars" are about to return, as SpikeTV and TNA Wrestling are moving TNA iMPACT from Thursday night’s to Monday night’s starting March 1st. Perhaps this will make wrestling "fun" again.
