Don’t look now but the Flames have a prospect putting up stupidly good offensive numbers. It’s a situation so rare in Flamesville that it merits attention, even at this early juncture.
Ryan Howse isn’t overly big and he was criticized as a one-dimensional player during his draft season. That’s probably why he slid all the way down to the 3rd round where the Flames took his 74th overall in 2009. It looks like it’s gamble that is paying off.
Last year, Howse had something of a break-out season, scoring 47 goals for a pretty poor Chiliwack team. This year he’s on pace to torch that total with a mind-boggling 14 goals in 9 games played.
Howse has scored in every Bruins game thus far save one, even book-ending the season-to-date with hat tricks. The latter feat was managed in under a minute against the Vancouver Giants.
Again, it’s really early and there’s no way Howse continues to put up his 112 goal pace, but it’s certainly encouraging to see a Flames kid knocking the ball out of the park offensively (rather than just being big and, you know, great in the dressing room and capable at both ends of the rink etc.)
Here’s our Prospect Profile of Howse from this past summer.
That is very good news. He’s not as small as I thought either. 5’11” 185 @ 19 years old. That’s Langkow’s size already, and he’s barely an adult. He’ll probably be able to put on another 5 lbs.
Very encouraging news. Could he be our Jordan Eberle? If he keeps this play up he very well could get an invite to the World Junior squad.
From Chiliwack he’ll have a short ride to Abby next year that’s for sure 🙂 Hopefully Calgary the year after that.
At this point that is very good news from a team that looks like it might be just as up and down as last year. Now with Goulet in charge of scouting I wonder if we can pick up a few more good late rounders? Thoughts?

Although in the land of Flame I’m waiting for the trade to come because I’m sure New York could use him and we could use Wade Redden. You can never have too many D men you know.

@Gange
Goulet is involved in pro scouting for Flames…meaning he only scouts other NHLers.
Oh I wasn’t sure of his role. Well that’s one thing I guess. Might avert Jokinen type debacles in the future.
What is the state of Junior scouting? That’s where I see the pain points really are, notwithstanding Ryan Howse.
My jaw hit the floor when I read 14 goals in 9 games. I expected this kid to put up good numbers this season but to start like this!!!!!
How much is pp and how much is es? I think he had a pretty good es percentage of points last year
Only 36 of 72 points were at ES last year.
It’s possible he’s Schremping his way to these big numbers.
7 PP goals according the WHL site.
Aha ok.
By looking at this youtube video he seems to have a nice shot, alot of pp goals but not playing the point like schremp iirc
