Waiver Wire Madness

With today being the last day to submit waiver lists, a lot of notable names hit the wire this morning with some of them getting scooped up.

On the Flames front, Matt Pelech and Cam Cunning cleared waivers while Brett Sutter was placed on the wire, no doubt with a view to sending him down. That cuts the hopefuls down to Brodie and Meyers in town, meaning they will both likely be on the roster come Thursday.

Elsewhere:

– Former Canucks first round pick Michael Grabner was claimed by the New York Islanders. Acquired by the Panthers in the Ballard trade, Grabner was unable to crack a pretty feeble line-up in Florida, but was nonetheless interesting to NYI (an even more depthless roster thanks to a recent injury to Okposo).

– Mattias Ritola was claimed by Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ritola is one of the Wings better forward prospects, although his results in the AHL thus far have been just okay. Clearly, Yzerman is familiar with the player and sees something in him worht taking a chance on.

Shane O’Brien was dealt for Ryan Parent. The former was expensive for his role in VAN at $1.6M and suffered from a number of discipline issues/run-ins with the coach last year. He’s a salary dump. As for Parent, he was a former first rounder by NAS who has already been traded 3 times. At 23 years old and with a lot of marginal results behind him at both the NHL and AHL level, Parent’s stock has plummeted since he was picked 18th overall in 2005.

– The Rangers placed Tim Kennedy and Todd White on waivers as well. This is an odd move seeing as both guys were recently acquired by Sather, especially since the team didn’t really need to clear space since Wade Redden was recently re-assigned to the AHL. This suggests that Sather is clearing room for a specific move in the near future.

Do you think that if Brett Sutter was not a Sutter he would have an easier time making this team? It seems like his dad will choose someone else over him in a tie to ensure that people do not think that he is just “giving” a spot to his son. Not saying that Brett Sutter should have made the team over Meyer or anything. Just wondering if anyone else gets the same feeling…

So is this what we expect Thursday.

    Tanguay – Jokinen – Iginla
    Hagman – Backlund – Bourque
    Glencross – Morrison – Conroy
    Jackman – Meyer – Ivanans

    Regehr – White
    Bouwmeester – Giordano
    Sarich – Brodie

    Kipper
    Karlsson

I would LOVE to see the Flames claim Kennedy. Young, offensive potential, plays center or wing, cheap like borscht. I don’t know much about his underlying numbers, but I can’t imagine him going unclaimed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are waiving him today but with the intent of playing him. Might as well waive him in the mass group to minimize the risk of him being picked up. Then play him until Moss or Kotalik is ready and then move either him or Meyer down.

I can’t see them playing 12-forwards, including Ivanan, especially with cap relief available. Unless they really need him on the heat.

…Now all we have to do… collectively… is know that “Meyers” last name is actually “Meyer” 😉 Funny how many people are getting this wrong! He is going to be a real positive find, Meyer. Brent knew what he brought to the table. Well done.

Sutter could be a good fit on Long Island.

It’s a numbers game, putting Sutter on waivers and keeping Meyers was the correct move. Meyers was pretty solid in camp, and clearly has moved ahead of Sutter on the depth chart.

Nothing wrong with Sutter, but the league has a surplus of 4th line rookie/vet talent. I expect him to clear waivers, not a huge loss if he does not.

You think Sutter will clear? Really?? I get a sense he won’t. Which will be most disappointing, as I agree Flamin’ Cannot’s comments above.

Good to see Meyer make the squad. Still think Staois gets waived. Thing 1 is Ivanans, correct? He needs to be waived, as well.

Grabner is a good pickup for the Isles.
