Given that this is happening around 10 a.m. your time, I bet you’re not watching.
Boy, you guys gotta be pumped. We had our Thanksgiving down here in America yesterday and we got today off to.. I dunno, go shopping at 3 a.m. or something. So anyway, as a result, the League says "Those people coming home with their $8 52-inch plasma TVs probably really want to watch hockey for the rest of the day."
Unfortunately for you Canadians, our boys got caught in the middle of it. The Bruins and Hurricanes played at noon here in Boston, there are a couple games at 1 p.m., including the Flames’, there’s a 2 o’clock tilt, one at 4, one at 5, then a couple at normal Friday hockey times.
Not that this probably matters to you. It doesn’t really make sense to play this game in particular at 1 p.m., or 11 a.m. Calgary time. Canadians don’t have the day off, and they sure as hell don’t want to watch THIS team on a semi-legal feed two hours after they get into the office. Senators fans don’t have it much better: they’re on at 1 against the Penguins. So know you’re not alone.
The good news for you is that you’re probably not going to have to watch this garbage. I am. I’m gonna watch every dreadful second of a game, as the best team in the league right now, statistically, carves up the Flames’ defense like so much Thanksgiving turkey. At least Staios and Mikkelson aren’t paired together for this one (they’re with Giordano and Babchuk, respectively, though I’m not sure how much of an improvement that bottom pairing is). More good news: Craig Conroy’s back in the lineup.
Of course, Olli Jokinen remains on the top line, so we still don’t have much to be thankful for.
I puked in my mouth when I read this article:
Sutter ‘fine’ with coaches, believes Flames still a playoff team
The guy has no idea what he’s done/is doing. His discussion about how, “…there’s enough goals in the lineup…” is proof that he doesn’t know what’s going on out there.
That’s true if he believes any of it. I don’t put any stock in what he says to the press though.
What I found most galling in the article though was the claim that “some people don’t want us to do well.”
That’s right Darryl…the criticism aimed at you isn’t because of the state of the club. It’s because some fans just don’t like the team in fact.
Of course, Olli Jokinen remains on the top line, so we still don’t have much to be thankful for.
Word is Backlund was moved up actually.
I don’t believe him either. I understand the idea of protecting tactics and strategy by providing misinformation (heck, I do it all the time), or even HR/personnel decisions (but really, as if he’d fire his own brother). But it has to end when you are lying to the fans about the overriding direction of the team.
I want the team to win, truly, which is why I don’t want to watch Darryl continue to screw it up.
I hear you.
Pretty bland affair so far. That’s a good thing from a Flames perspective.
The “some people don’t want us to win” comments were motivating and might have even had a touch of truth in the 03/04 playoffs but this is really going back to the well too many times.
He’s a GM whose time has passed him by, this would be a great team pre-lockout. Not as much post-lockout.
I’d love to see the Flames win the the west and go on to the Stanley cup and bring that back to Calgary. This team is not the team to do that.
The good news is that it’s still 0-0 this afternoon
Oh and I’ve been somewhat impressed with Mikkelsen as of late.
i love this start time. barely got home from work
haha, I can imagine.
power play is awful
Chances were 8-6 in favor of the Flyers in that one. Neither team had a true, 10-bell chance. Flames were well behind until the final 3 minutes or so.

This time around, Sutter was talking about his own fanbase rather than “everyone else”. It’s his way of “explaining” all of the criticism of him and the club right now.
still holding out hope for the 20-24-25 line
haha…never going to happen.
Hey Kent, you PVR all the games right?
I’m curious about the way the NHL counts shots. This may be relative to your scoring chances as well.
I’ve been thinking about this for months, but never had the opportunity come up.
At around the 14:15 mark, the Flyers had a chance in the slot, it turned into a big scrum. I counted as many as four or five shots, but one may have been Morrison trying to push it back to Kipper.
Then there was a shot of the faceoff IIRC.
That should be at least 4, if not 6 shots.
NHL.com only shows 3. (their next recorded is @ 19:00)
I’ve been wondering for ages how strict they are recording that. I swear there were a few shots pounded off the pads, and the shots guy just went “Ahhh….that ‘looked’ like two”
Can you help me out here with your PVR tech.
I’m watching online and working at the same time so….
On an aside, I remember Trevor Kidd saying that games in Canada only legit shots were recorded. When he played at home in Carolina, any time he touched the puck it was a shot.
Kidd: CALGARY 96-97 57GP .900sv%, CAROLINA 97-98 47GP .922sv%
I only PVR games that I’m not watching live, so not sure I can help this afternoon.
That said, you’re feelings are correct. There are certainly some rinks in the league that are poor at counting shots. I believe NJ is another one as are the rangers.
You’ll probably find this post interesting.
I actually thought Sutter’s comments in that article were pretty fair. I’ll leave it at that.
Anyone think Moss might be worth a look centering between Tanguay and Iginla?
Good PK for the Flames in this one. Not doing anything else, but at least there’s that.
That was a bloody unbelievable goal.
…and then there is that. [email protected]
The hockey gods hate the Flames.
haha, it certainly feels that way.
Was that a man with a party mullet? Or a girl with a womustache?
The lines have been mixed beyond all recognition.
Chances were 6-5 in favor of the Flyers, which is something of a victory given all the penalties that went against CGY.
bobrovsky look good, nice pickup
Im confident the Flyers will find a way to screw it up.
hows the corsi doing?
About 50-50 – http://timeonice.com/shots1011.php?gamenumber=20323
aha, thanks.
17 looks lazy
He’s had a roughly blah start to the season, frankly. He’s either hurt, or missing Langkow something terrible.
something i’ve never been totally clear on: fenwick is ALL shots attempted whereas corsi is just SOG, right?
Nope. Corsi is all shots at the net. Fenwick is everything except blocked shots.
gotcha. thx.
That’s the concern with the V-H stance from the corner. Players like Briere can pick the hole. Quick reaction by Kipper though. But that was close.
