The Regehr Watch

Having to roll to the top prospects luncheon and having Kent in the air means we’re away from the site at a potentially inopportune time.  I thought I’d post this to get discussion going, as Darren Dreger is reporting the Flames have asked defenceman Robyn Regehr to waive his no trade clause and accept a trade to Buffalo.  As things become more official, it’ll be good to have a thread up where the comments can start to flow.

If anything becomes official, we’ll have opinion pieces up later in the day, plus we’ll have lots more coverage here in Minneapolis.

…and for the record, I just heard Pierre McGuire mention that Ryan Smyth could go to “Edmonton or Calgary” on TSN. So, I stand corrected…maybe it’s not “completely ridiculous”, as I mentioned before. Just ridiculous.

One thing no one has mentioned yet about what Philly has done is that in my opinion the West just got a hole lot more difficult. There are two more elite level players playing against the flames more often now. obviously there will be more changes to come but in terms of how these trades affect Calgary it’s definatly in a negative way. It’ll be tougher to beat those teams now…

LOL – if Sutter was still driving the bus I’d call that prediction a slam dunk….for the moment I’ll give Feaster the benefit of the doubt. Reggie’s value is higher without packaging Stajafail, Gagman or Kotalikafail! THOUGH I’ve heard rumors of a 3 way deal that would see Stajan leave calgary, and I’d be AYY OHH KAYY with that.

      • SickFloBro

I agree. Seeing Stajan go would be a dream come true.

Bob McKenzie is reporting that Calgary is actively working to acquire Ryan Smyth. I’m not a fan of the idea of bringing Smyth to Calgary, but I’d definitely trade Stajan for him. Though, the chances of it being that simple aren’t likely.

This was bound to happen with the Flames missing the playoffs for the past two years. Teams are not going to take on Kipper with his $5.8 million. Feaster is adamant on trading Iginla, plus Schenn is now a Flyer.

Reggie’s salary is attractive, he’s a shut-down defenceman team covet. No team would have taken Jay-Bo’s salary at $6.8 million. Reggie’s footspeed has diminished.

I still wonder what the Flames would have been like had they not traded Fleury for Reggie in 1999. A few years of Iggy and Fleury together would have been awesome. NY killed Fleury.

I think for the past few seasons Regehr has regressed. He doesn’t have the footspeed to keep up with the speed of the game. To get a high draft pick, and / or prospects with speed and skill would be a bonus.
The prospect pool and overall speed/skill level for the Calgary Flames is not bad, but with smart trades and moves it would improve dramatically.
I believe, trading for Ryan Smyth would be a bad move because we don’t need a player who is past his prime, we need players who are primed to rise.
If there is potential trade with Buffalo, I would like to see them try and get M.A. Gragnani, I thought in the playoffs for Buffalo he was one player which showed up fo every game. He is young, good two way defenseman, who reminds me of Giordano.

If you think this team is going to rebuild you haven’t been paying attention to what the Flames continue to do – get old has-been hockey players. As such, Smyth is a GREAT fit! Even Feaster said that he liked the core of the team! When have we heard that before. Time to rebuild boys! Move Robin and then Iggy and start the process now.

First off, I was expecting the blueline to lose one significant piece. JBo had been rumored going to Ottawa. But moving Regehr (and probably one of the Calgary second rounders) to Buffalo in a deal that includes Luke Adam and the 16th pick would be a good move for both clubs.

As for the noise about Ryan Smyth coming to Calgary, lets hope that its just that: noise! That would not be constructive for the Flames, particularly if it takes cap space away from a deal with Tanguay.

  • Jarom

We’re dreaming if we think we could get Meyers…

I find myself agreeing with Oilfan (slaps self to make sure im not having some sort of a mental fit) But Smyth makes no sense in Cgy…

  • Derzie

Do we have new scouts? I hope so because if Feaster is getting fed the same roster for drafts as Sutter did, AND Robyn is on the table, we are in really big trouble.

  • Derzie

I want this trade to happen, so Regehr will be gone. That means more time for the Sedin cycle. That guy is a beast, and I guess Alice Hemsky will be glad he’s gone.

You guys in Calgary make me laugh. Do any of you watch hockey? You can’t have a roster of all offensive d-men. He is your best shut down guy and looks like you are just giving him away. LOL

    LOVE IT

Sorry but your man crush on Gio is hilarious. The guy has never had shut down mins. My boy Kesler skates cirles around him.

I think Ryan Smyth’s name is only surfacing b/c when he was a free season after his trade to NYI he was a free agent and Iginla tried to convince him to come to Calgary but he chose Colorado instead.

Smyth is older than Iggy and less talented, he’s got net presence and can score some ugly, greasy goals in front of the net. However, we have a David Moss who does that already.

The priority is to keep Tanguay, he’s got chemistry with Iggy and they both make up two-thirds of the top line.

If they can’t sign Tanguay there are equivalent players that can be had via free agency or through trade.

  • RKD

If we can do the Regehr trade and we get salary cap relief and don’t have to really take on salary its really good for the flames. Now if Feaster is really going after Smyth now that he would essentially be a third line center behind Richards and Kopitar and you are not paying a third line center 6.25 million, if you can trade Hagamn AND Ivanans(remember he may off LTIR come september and he has played for the Kings) we would only be taking on 2.65 in extra salary and asuming we dump Kotalik in the minors or a team takes him on waivers(I wouldn’t mind that) we may still have enough salary to make it all work. If we still manage to sign tangs we could have our forward lines look like 1.)Tangs-Backlund-Iggy,2.)Smyth-Langks-Bourque,3.)GlennX-Olli(Stajan)-Moss,4.)Jackman-Kosto-Bouma, those are not bad lines, a little old, but if we play how we did during those winning months we could put a few good streaks together. I have Stajan in brackets, cause I think one of Olli or Stajan will not be a flame come september.

If moving Regehr is to facilitate money for signing Tanguay I can support that. If it is to bring in Ryan Smyth I oppose that strongly. He won’t fit with Iggy and I like the idea of Bourque and Moss flanking Langkow on the tough minutes unit. Curtis Glencross occupies the #3 line LW spot – so there is nowhere that makes sense for Smyth even if you can send Hagman to LA to free some salary.

Actually I think Feaster should be targeting some of the lower end teams as a place to dump Hagman – Florida and the Islanders are going to have a tough time making the salary floor – and adding an NHL forward with little committment to the future would be a good move for them.

As to lamenting Regehr’s loss – remember that last year Bouwmeester played out of position – on the right side. If this goes through he switches back to the left side. I’m Ok with that – 24 minutes for Jay, 22 for Gio and 14 for TJ Brodie. I like our left side if that is the case. What needs to be addressed is someone to play the right side. 20 for Sarich and 12 -14 for Carson, but after that there is nothing. Does Ian White return as a FA ?
