Flames Through The First Month

We’re one month in and the Flames have failed to set the hockey world aflame (pun intended and preemptively apologized for). Rob sums up Calgary’s underlying numbers in the post below, but here are some other thoughts about the club’s first four weeks of action kicking around my head heading into November.

Black Box: Week 4

One month into the season and despite back-to-back wins the Flames are 2nd last in the Western Conference. On the other hand they’re only 2 points out of the 8th-place play-off spot.  Rene Bourque leads the team with 5 goals, Alex Tanguay with 7 assists, Olli Jokinen with 28 shots (and 2nd to…

October 31 News and Notes

All Hallows Eve is here in all its glory, with children headed to the door this evening in search of treats their parents would never let them near any other night, and those same parents openly regretting the sugar rush they’re about to bestow on said…

NATION RADIO – OCTOBER 29, 2011

Another week in the NHL season is now in the can and as expected Phil Kessel leads the league in points, Nikolai Khabilbulin has the lowest GAA among goalies and the Oilers are in first place in the West. POSTGAME: TANGLED UP IN BLUE

The Calgary Flames came into this game looking for redemption against the Blues for what was by far their worst game of the season. I don’t know if you could definitively say they got it, but they got the win.. and in the end, that’s all that matters. For most of the night,…

Game 9 – Flames vs. Blues Live Chat

Game 9 – Flames vs. Blues Live Chat Flames second chance against what is a pretty good team. Although Calgary’s record in October is pretty underwhelming, the truth is the opening month’s schedule has been pretty soft by objective standards. Aside from Pittsburgh, the Blues are probably the best team the club will face before…

FGD: Take Two

The Calgary Flames played their worst game of the early season against the St. Louis Blues, falling 5-2 in the second contest of the campaign.  Now the Flames look to right that early season defeat when they host the Blues tonight in game five of a a six game home stand (7 pm, Sportsnet Flames…

An Attempt At A Defensive Puck Possession Metric

I’ve been scratching my head for a while now, trying to come up with a puck possession metric that focuses on defense rather than offense-driven numbers. I mean, if you’re Anton Volchenkov, you might be responsible for preventing a lot of goals, but there’s always the chance that last year’s New Jersey forwards were incapable…

Flames Comparables: Reserve Defensemen

Every Thursday we’re using the Snepsts system to project how many points each of the Flames may score this year. Now that we’ve moved on to players with limited NHL, we’re switching to AHL-to-NHL Translations. We’ve already looked at most of the Flames key forwards and key defensemen, and this week we’ll look…

Kris Chucko Retires; Highlights Education

At the age of just 25, former Calgary Flames first round draft pick Kris Chucko is done with professional hockey – at least the on ice portion. That’s right. Chucko has had enough.
