Post-Game: So That Happened…

No, the above picture isn’t from the recent Flames loss to Dallas, but it might as well have been.

Tonight the reeling Flames were looking to break out of…

You know what? I don’t have it in me to do a a full review tonight. The Stars big line of Seguin and Benn came out and beat the Flames up at ES. Calgary’s goaltending was mediocre, but Dallas also had a lot of good looks at even strength. Flame of the game is, uh…Sven Baertschi because he was at least noticeable all night. Matt Stajan gets a mention for two goals.

The Flames started well enough this year, but reality is starting to sink in for this club. The roster is such that it can’t really sustain losses like Giordano and Glencross long-term and they still haven’t found an answer in net. Also, they aren’t a club that can afford to skate two below replacement level ruffians on the 4th line if they’re going to compete with good teams.

We all knew the rebuild was going to be rough at times. There was a lot anticipation and excitement heading into the season thanks to the change in direction, but we’re only now entering what will be a long winter. Hopefully there’s a nice spring awaiting the org on the other side.

Flames in Blue.

  • Bean-counting cowboy

I mentioned this on the game day post: do you think it’s. a coincidence that two of our worst games of the year come after we trade for an Oiler? Losing mentality has found it’s way to Calgary, it’s like a plague it’s that contagious.

  • beloch

Fans of both the Oilers and Flames are no doubt saying, “I know our team sucks hardcore this year, but please, pretty please oh merciful Cthulu, let us beat Shelbyville on Saturday!”

I’m saying it too. If nothing else goes right this season, CROM grant us revenge* on those putrescent #$%@’s in Oilerland!

*even though they’ve done nothing to deserve vengeance other than being who they are. Hell, I don’t think I could take it if Dallas Eakins got all smiley after beating the Flames.

      • DoubleDIon

First off… full disclosure. Oiler fan here. I came over today hoping to read about your misery and get some satisfaction from it in order to lift my spirits. Yes, its come to that for us. Hoping others join us in our misery. So sad…

Few things. I know Flame fans love to point at our 7 year rebuild. I have a diehard Flamer room mate who reminds me daily. But thats completely bunk. We started with Taylor Hall in 2010. So thats 3 maybe 4 years. If you want to start going back 7 years to Gagner/Pjarvi drafts you have to say the Flames started 3 years ago with Sven/Monahan. Thats the equivalent. Because those first 2-3 years we were drifting in denial just like you guys were the past 2-3 years. Its the exact same thing, and it netted us a few top 10, decent 2nd line, but not elite players (Gagner & Perron)

But I’m not here to debate that or anything. I’m here to tell you its worse than you can even imagine. If I was a Flame fan the only comfort I’d have is that Burke is in town instead of our resident idiot Kevin Lowe. I’d have confidence in Burke. But this whole losing to get better thing is completely bogus. Its a cancer that eats your soul. I have buddies with season tickets who can’t give them away. $150/seat tix and nobody wants them. Apathy here is easily at mid 90s levels. People aren’t even angry anymore. Destroyed. Lost. Dead. But the anger stage has passed.

So to answer your question, how have we been doing it for 7 years… Not good.

My advice. Don’t do it. Hopefully for you Feaster and Burke have a better plan than purposely tanking for many more years to get high draft picks. Because its like selling your soul to the devil. You lose a bit of your inner person and can never get it back.

The problem I see is for the Flames is that you have zero elite talent. So I’m not really sure how you’ll get it without continuing on with at least a bit more suck. I’m sure you’ll say “just this 1 more year”. But thats what we’ve said ever since drafting Taylor Hall in 2010. Its an epidemic. A terminal disease.

I loathe the Flames, but I can honestly say I hope you don’t go through what we are going through right now. Nobody, not even your worst enemy deserves this.

        Sincerely,
        Crushed Oiler Fan Todd

  • Graham

Unfortunately, this is what a rebuild looks like, the odd good game missed in with lots of
disasters like tonight. Over the past week or so, the Flames have been playing some of the better teams in the league, and the score board reflects it.

  • CDB

Wow that was bad. To be expected somewhat, but pretty putrid.

Hartleys infatuation with Colborne is comical. He was pathetic tonight and still got rolled out there with Cammi constantly. Meanwhile whenever the two lugs on Backlunds line left the ice and he got to spend 15-20 seconds on the ice with real ice hockey players, he looked pretty good.

Another hilarious note is Hartley’s use of his helicopter line. D zone draws and after getting scored on. If it wasn’t so painful I’d laugh, but instead I have to cry. Jackman and McGratton literally cannot the puck out of their own zone. They lack the basic skills and smarts to do so. Putting them out for an own zone draw is essentially setting the opposition up in the Flames end on a 5 on 3. They can’t even cover their point men for christ sake

We just got scored on so lets throw out worst line wtih two goons (one of whom is a punching bag when he fights) and get hemmed in our zone for two minutes straight. That’ll make things better. Momentum. Grit. Truculence.

Get his moron out of town

    • DoubleDIon

I agree that Hartley’s player usage is horribly frustrating, but other than that I don’t mind him as a coach. Sven and Backlund have gotten the short end of the stick all year long. Backlund cannot prop up McGratton and Jackman single handedly and then is scratched despite his best efforts. I literally watched him carry pucks by himself all night because those guys couldn’t keep up. Crosby couldn’t float those two, it’s a ridiculous expectation. If you want to play Backs on the 4th line it annoys me, but at least give him something to work with. Bring up Knight and make the 4th line Reinhart, Backlund and Knight. That line could work. We don’t have the luxury of wasting roster spots on trash.

Colborne has at best shown glimpses, but IMO not nearly enough to supplant Backlund. Stajan has been better, Monahan needs minutes, but Colborne shouldn’t be playing ahead of Backlund offensively or defensively. Plays die on his stick and he’s an average skater. Backlund can manage the puck and is an exceptional skater. He’s not showing confidence offensively, but at least he doesn’t turn the puck over and can effectively distribute it.

I like Hartley’s system though. He just needs more talent to work with. Giordano leaves a gaping unfillable hole and Glencross being out forces everyone to move up a spot and become a liability.

  • DoubleDIon

    The picture is priceless!

Depending on Ortio’s development this year with the Heat save one of your buy-outs for Ramo at end of season. Highly overrated!

Time someone reminds Hartley this is a development year. Need more player shuffles between Calgary and Abbotsford. It’s not as if we are going to make the playoffs.

  • DoubleDIon

Well, Calgary is finally getting to play some subpar teams in the next week. It will be interesting to see how our level or crumminess measures up to teams like Edmonton and CBJ. I want to believe we can beat these teams and hope we don’t see more the beatings that Dallas foisted on us.
