Flames Sign Deryk Engelland

After a couple of solid signings in Raymond and Hiller, the Flames add their first eyebrow raiser in Dereyk Engelland for 3 years at $2.9M per year.

Engelland plays both defense and forward, though he mostly acts as a d-man. He’s big, he’s mean, can drop the gloves…and he’s not very good at much else. He averaged a team low 13 minutes of ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins last year, faced lower tier opposition and had some of the worst underlying possession numbers amongst Pens defensemen. Clearly, like Bollig, this is another step in the new regime’s quest to “get bigger and protect the kids”.

Engelland is a 32 year old tough guy and third pairing defender. At best, he’s a way to get the Flames over the cap floor finish line for the next few seasons and a skating harm deterrence. At worst, he’s their next Shane O’Brien.

Treliving talking about Cammaleri pisses me right off. Burke could’ve gotten something for him, but was delusional enough to believe he could resign him.

Why would Cammi resign here on a REBUILDING team, when he chose to leave here to go to Montreal 5 years ago when the Flames were at least a competing team?

That was a failure on Burke’s part, any way you slice it. MacT in EDM at least got assets for Hemsky, because he was smart enough to realize Hemsky wasn’t gonna stay and that that a 3rd and a 5th was better than nothing.

    Agree/Disagree?

The comments about the draft and free agency have pretty much turned into youtube comments. You can’t take them seriously.

I’m seeing a lot of, BT IS THE WORST GM OF ALL TIME! THIS IS THE WORST DRAFT EVER.

    Really?

We had a GM that traded for Alex Kotalik, Re-signed Olli Jokinen, resigned Cory Sarich, chose Steffan Kronwall over Anton Stralman, Give Tanguay a massive contract in his 30’s, almost lost a bunch of draft picks for ROR, draft Jankowski in the first round.

All in the last 4 years.

And you guys think what’s happening here is bad? The core group of young players is the same except now we have Bennett, another goalie, and some bigger guys in really late rounds. We then signed overpaid a defenseman that won’t be here when he gets replaced by a younger guy.

Seriously please post actual discussion and not hyperbolic knee-jerk reaction to things that clearly aren’t true, you haven’t seen the team play yet, you’ve never seen the draft picks play either. I cringe every time I read these comments now.

    It’s actually really embarrassing.

The Burke wannabes should be happy.

    Engelland -> $3.0M ?!?!??

The new smartest guys in the room, think that total plugs have more to give in their ‘games’. What are they gonna give? Why are they NOT valuing skill? Why are they valuing toughness so much more than every other team?

LA’s 2 goons are who? Chicago’s? St. Lou’s? Who builds a team like this?

    Disgusting.

Just dumb talkin idiocy. Does everyone realize how terrible Engelland is?

    We will now.

But if that’s the case, why sign Jonas Hiller? Why sign Mason Raymond? It just doesn’t make sense that we would make a couple of good signings, and then suddenly turn around and make a tank-mode signing.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the Engelland signing is NOT a tank-mode signing, but rather Treliving and/or Burke think that he’s actually valuable to the team.

Agreed. And I don’t think Brian Burke would ever consider tanking. He believes that it’s akin to cheating, which I do agree to a certain degree I guess

Remember, even if the Flames finish dead last and have the highest probability of winning the lottery they could lose it and not be able to land McDavid. Look at what happened, Florida won the lottery when it should have been the Sabres.

How do you think Brodie feels about this signing? Our first pairing defence man is making less than our #7 coke machine.

That is both moronic and idiotic.

      • flamesburn89

If Engelland is 2.9, Brodie can expect like 10 lol.

All kidding aside, the cap floor and term are our biggest concerns. BT talked about room for the young kids, which is a plus.

To my mind Engelland will play some games, and for the rest he will occupy the press box and be over the moon for his 2.9.yr salary. It is an overpay, but who cares.
