Flames Recall Freddie Hamilton – UPDATE

That’s right, Dougie’s older brother has been recalled on an emergency basis. Hamilton the elder has been one of Stockton’s better forwards this year, managing 16 goals and 35 points in 53 games. Only Derek Grant and Kenny Agostino have scored more.

The recall suggests one of the Flames regulars must be on the shelf tonight. Initial speculation is that it’s Sean Monahan because he missed practice yesterday (see below). If so, that will leave the Flames with a Gaudreau-Backlund-Frolik first line against the Jets tonight (and then three 4th line units behind them). Bennett and Brodie remain on the shelf as well.

It’s also interesting that Hamilton got the call over a handful of other Flames hopefuls, including Bill Arnold, Drew Shore and Emile Poirier. All three guys were expected to press for full time jobs heading into the season last summer, but none of them has managed to poke his head above the crowd on the farm this year.

We’ll update if more information becomes available.

UPDATE – Reports from the morning skate are that it’s actually Mikael Backlund who is out rather than Sean Monahan. Bad luck for Backlund, who has been on fire recently.

UPDATE 2 – Okay word now is that Backlund is in…so it might still be Monahan. Or someone else. Anyways, Hamilton is a game time decision. Yes, this is ridiculous.

haha I suggested that exact line a few days ago and said it would be nice to see Monahan away from Johnny and Backlund given a real chance to be a 1st liner. Let’s just say the response was a little less supportive of having Backlund on the 1st line.

To me Backlund on the 1st line just makes sense especially if you look at his HERO charts. His Corsi is definitely 1st line material both offensively and defensively. I think him with Johnny will be unreal, he will gain possession and Johnny will be Johnny Hockey and that equals points all around.

interesting choice. Was a bit of a disappointing year for some on the Farm, or maybe expectations were unreasonably high for some (like Porier). Doesn’t mean these other guys are washed up – was first year of pro – still lots of time.

is this the first time Flames have played brothers?

I think Freddie Hamilton has earned the right to a call up, he’s the 4th highest scoring on the Heat and leads the team with 160 shots plus he’s a RW shot. He must be playing well enough down there on a consistent basis to get a call up. I think Arnold and Poirier have been just okay. Still want to see Shinkaruk at some point.

At least this make the last 20 games interesting, nothing against Hamilton Sr. but i really want to see Arnold, I don’t care if his year hasn’t been stellar, I want to see what happens when he on the ice with Johnny!!

    • Nick24

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty confident that Bill Arnold just came back from injury and he’s only played a few games since. Arnold will get his shot.

They probably want to see what Hamilton can do In the NHL to help them decide if they want to resign him.

“really want to see Arnold, I don’t care if his year hasn’t been stellar, I want to see what happens when he on the ice with Johnny!!”

I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Arnold on the top line. Could happen, but I wouldn’t bet on BH throwing him up there given his skill set.

      • slapshot444

That would make perfect sense….however the chemistry between the two at Boston Collage was legendary. So regardless, it needs to be seen, flop or not. AND i realize that Bob is not a risk taker but hopefully one of the bigger boys in the organization asks to see the combo in action. If its not this year it will be next.

    • Avalain

Honestly, I don’t think that they were an amazing top line because they had some special chemistry. It’s more likely that Gaudreau is simply a really good hockey player. I expect that if Monahan was on his line in college they would have done even better.

” i really want to see Arnold, I don’t care if his year hasn’t been stellar, I want to see what happens when he on the ice with Johnny!!”

Sorry, but this never works. Remember when Hnat Domenichelli was re-united with Iggy? You don’t? That’s because these things never work out.

If Arnold ends up having an NHL career, it will not be on a line with Gaudreau.

  • Dan the Drunk

Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, and Ron Sutter were all involved with the Flames at various points. Shaun (Brian’s son) and Brett (Darryl’s son) have been in the Flames system as well.

    It’s Duane’s birthday today.

  • Jake the Snail

Flames website shows no lineup changes since last game…means Freddie could sit and watch tonight unless Hartley decides to give someone a day of rest from minor injury.

  • We’re such a grownup team. We have a Johnny, a Dougie, a Kenny, and now a Freddie. A Matty Franchise and a Joe(y) Colborne. A Mickis. Dennis just reminds me of Dennis the Menace, so he counts. And a TJ, which isn’t the most grown-up name either.

One of the Mich(ae)ls needs to become Mickey. Or Both. Joshie. Marky. Kevin is already good enough.

    Such grownups.

    • supra steve

      What’s your point?

Grodie, Wayne, Mario, Sidney, Bobby, Connor, Joey, Dougie…are any of those more grown up? They play a children’s game, and by the time they are grown-up, they are already known as Johnny, or Bobby, or whatever.

Perhaps you are the one needing to grow up?

      • Kat

Um. Calm down. I was joking. T

In case it needs to be made clear: I like their names. I’M OKAY WITH THEIR NAMES. A rose by any other name would be as fantastic at hockey anyway, right?

      • Tomas Oppolzer

There wasn’t one. It was a fun, tongue-in-cheek comment about the names that sound like the nicknames parents would often assign children. We’ll make sure to ask you, Suba Steve, if it’s okay to have fun next time though.
