Let’s talk jerseys: Which ones we have, which ones we want, and oh hey there’s a sale

You know what’s a good way to get a bunch of hardcore Flames nerds excited? The revelation that jerseys are on sale.

This makes sense: after all, with the upcoming switch to Adidas next season, every jersey currently worn by NHL teams will become out of date. That doesn’t mean the new looks will be wildly different, but a mass switchover does mean there are going to be a lot of outdated items in stock that will have to go at some point.

Anyway. In our own little FlamesNation channel, Mike Fail noticed jerseys were on sale, and that set off a number of us yelling about jerseys for nearly a solid hour. We got pretty into it, and so figured: hey, why not bring the jersey conversation to the blog?

So! Here we are. Are you a jersey nerd? Have you got a collection of ever-growing Flames jerseys, or just one or two reliable ones to wear in and out throughout the season? Any jerseys you own have any particularly special meaning to you, or come about in a unique way? We wanna hear your jersey stories, because it’s a Sunday in May and it’s something fun to do.

Ari: I’ve got nine Flames jerseys: regular home versions of Jarome Iginla, Miikka Kiprusoff, T.J. Brodie, Dougie Hamilton, and Sven Baertschi (the only jersey I’ve ever picked up, like, right away. I got him to sign it after an AHL game in Toronto, too), an away Robyn Regehr, two retros in Craig Conroy and Mikael Backlund, and a blank Ol’ Blasty (the fire snot horse) that a friend of mine pointed out to me was available for $37 on Etsy. I don’t know if I’ll be getting a new Adidas one when they come out, due to a couple of factors (I wanna know what they look like, plus I already have three current players so I think I’m doing okay).

As a bonus, I’ve also got an away Team Canada Iggy from the Vancouver Olympics, and a regular Team Finland Kipper. I’ve also got a Hitmen Heritage Classic jersey; that’s it for me on the hockey front.

Mike: Somewhere, in a box at my parents’ I think my first jersey – a Colorado Avalanche Joe Sakic jersey – exists. I grew up super poor so getting anything hockey related quickly become a coveted possession. Now I’ve managed to accumulate a decent collection of mostly Flames jerseys including: two blank retros, a Mikael Backlund home, retro Backlund, a retro Michael Frolik, a retro Matthew Tkachuk, and an autographed Joni Ortio retro.

In terms of non-Flames jerseys I have: a Patrice Bergeron Bruins home jersey, a Phoenix Coyotes original kachina, an Arizona Coyotes Tobias Rieder jersey, the god awful Dallas Stars mooterus, a Stadium Series San Jose Sharks jersey, a Team Belarus 2010 jersey, a blank Calgary Hitmen jersey, and one of those amazing Nike Team Canada jerseys.

Christian T: For Flames jerseys, I currently have a Sean Monahan home jersey, Mikael Backlund third jersey, a blank ’80s home retro, and a blank ’90s home pedestal jersey (I hope to get it lettered at some point; quite possibly #8 Valeri Bure, but I’m open for suggestion). I’ll also count my 2005 blank home jersey among the collection, although I’m no longer a youth and it doesn’t fit me anymore. I’m probably going to get a Tkachuk retro at some point, possibly when I have money.

Other hockey jerseys include a Ron Francis Hartford Whalers jersey, Mario Lemieux, and an Atlanta Thrashers Value Village find with the numbers ripped off for some reason. Other jerseys are NBA jerseys, which might be a little too off topic even for this post.

Ryan: I haven’t bought a lot of Flames jerseys in recent years so I don’t have too many recent jerseys – I have a blank vintage, a blank CCM road jersey, a blank Heritage Classic, a Dion Phaneuf CCM home jersey and Reebok Edge homes with Eric Nystrom and David Moss on the back. I’ve also collected jerseys from many of Calgary’s AHL affiliates, notably a Turner Elson Adirondack Flames road, a Carter Bancks Abbotsford Heat home, a blank Quad City Flames home and a blank Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights road jersey. In terms of non-Flames jerseys, I have a Jarome Iginla Penguins jersey I got at a heavy discount.

That’s just what some of us have – and again, we might be a little enthusiastic, but hey, what better way to show support for your favourite team and/or player? (Who could have possibly foreseen a group of FlamesNation writers all having Backlund jerseys?) True, it can be expensive, but if you’re into jersey collecting…

I love hearing what jerseys others have, so please share in the comments! Feel free to share ones you’re thinking of getting as well, or ones you’re hoping to get in the future – say you’re waiting for a prospect to make the team, or something along those lines – and let’s get into the jersey love on this fine Sunday.

I have a home Regehr jersey I got in ’04
I won a Phaneuf jersey in a bar in 2010. 12 hours later he had been traded to Toronto. Now it’s a Giordano jersey.
I bought a retro Bennett jersey last year.
I have a yellow Flames practice jersey that I think was worn by James Patrick
    Steve Yzerman Detroit jersey
Steve Yzerman 2002 Team Canada jersey
A CCCP Larionov jersey I got in Russia
Prospects: a retro (love the retros) Backlund or TKACHUK.

I don’t have many…. It takes me awhile to make the leap.
I was a huge fan of Iggy before I ran a promotion with him….. I ended up getting a black third jersey( with the horse) signed. I jumped on the Johhny fan train 3 years ago but must apologize for taking it off and throwing it on the floor during the playoffs.

I have been watching a bit of Johnny at tha WC and he is a different player. It is time to pull the switch on a Hayes trade…their chemistry is undeniable. I think the cost would be reasonable. He finished 5 th in team scoring during the league but dropped significantly in the playoffs with only 3 pts in 12 games. Simply put… He makes Johnny shoot and be the trigger man.

  • sathome

I have a blank third jersey, a blank home jersey from the ’04 run, and I just ordered a retro Gaudreau jersey on Friday.

In non-Flames jerseys, I have (in youth sizes) a 90s Avalanche, 90s black Blackhawks, 2000ish Team Canada, and one of those black/red/white Sabres jerseys with the buffalo on it.

    • McRib

I actually didn’t mind our most recent third jersey, other than the “Wal-Mart looking” wordmark, but the black shoulders and horizontal striping were sharp.

  • Aadvarkian Abakeneezer

I have one red Iggy jersey. That’s it.

I suppose I could buy another one, but even on sale the price is a little extortionate for a freaking shirt. Hockey related purchases are always big splurge for me, so I’d rather spend the money on the few games a year I can afford to go to.

The retros are awesome though. One of the best jerseys in the league.

  • King Quong

Kipper, Phaneuf, Tkachuk, Ferland for regular home jerseys, Bennett Retro, Baertschi Third Jersey with the god awful wordmark (present from my dad didnt get to open it until after he was traded lol!) and my prized possession is my 1989 Fleury

  • JumpJet

I’ve got a blank retro and blank ’04 red, but my pride and joy is my signed Theo Fleury late ’90s white “pedestal” jersey. I’ve always like the amount of black on those jerseys, but the stripping is awful. Unfortunately it’s a youth size and I am no longer a youth. I’ve thought about getting it framed, but for now it lives in a closet.

  • Got two Flames jerseys.

First was my 2004 vintage red WARRENER 44. Got it in March before the big run. Was able to get it autographed by Warrener, Iginla, Kiprusoff, Turek and Donovan when I ran into the them at the Eau Claire Sheraton, where the team stayed during the third round. A stripper also signed it a week later late one night after ripping it up on the Red Mile. So that could impact its re-sale value.

My wife got me a Reebok red Brodie 7 jersey this past year. Because she has good taste.

Hoping for a red retro jersey at some point, though if they do a re-design in red-gold-white, I’d snag one of those.

  • I have an old tiny vintage white Vernon jersey, my game-worns include pedestal logo Jeff Cowan from 1999/2000, Dave Lowry horsehead 2002/2003, and Robyn Regehr away white 2010/2011 (and according to my image research the last one he ever wore on the road for Calgary). Also have a Fred Brathwaite horsehead replica, a current home Iginla, a Heritage classic Iginla, retro red Iginla, pedestal red Theo Fleury, and a blank 2004 red home jersey. I need a current Flame and am leaning towards Bennett in retro red.

  • Puckhead

    Retro all the way.

The European stylized ones the Flames used to wear were awful.

The Ducks jersies really suck, possibly the worst in the NHL right now.

I sheepishly admit to not owning any jersies since I stopped playing as a kid. If I were to buy one though, it would be a a toss up between Backlund, MT or Ferland.

  • BendingCorners

Instead of jerseys can we talk about hockey trades?
Neither of these will happen since the counter-party has no reason to participate but to get a top 4 defenceman we might need to do something like Frolik+Freddie to Winnipeg for Trouba, or Bennett to NYR for Skjei, and then find a way till fill our top 6 with a missing forward with some other trade.
You guys know more about who is available or motivated that I do; could you run an article on the subject sometime please?

  • brew22

  • freethe flames

I’m more interested in talking about who is wearing the team uniforms next year than who owns them. There was a good article by Haynes on some of the possible combinations the Flames could look at in net.

  • Sane Opinion

I have a first iteration of the home red when they changed it. I got an iginla. I have an old blasty I won at a game, signed by stars of the 04 team, gretz and heudey also signed the hem. Thanks to your story today I just ordered a retro fluery 14. His last shootout in precseason was a cherished memory. Thanks!

  • RealMcHockeyReturns

Great article, now lets get people’s design ideas. Perhaps start with theme (e.g. like Flames current but stripes moved…), colors (main red, second back, trim only white and yellow), and then let people go

  • Lucky 13

Wow I love the Flames but seriously I only have 3 Jerseys.
1989 Home- when home color was white
1988 Away – Theo Fluery Jersey
    Red Vintage
1993 CCM Away Jersey with my name and Fluery’s #14 on it.. was a gift from fellow firefighters when I left the service, plus they gave me one of the brass nozzles I dragged the shi* out of mounted on a hand made plaque..
Other than that my collection consists of beer mugs, socks, pj’s and several hoodies that I use frequently.
Gawd I wish I had the $$ to spend on jerseys.

My favourite is still the retro ones… gives me warm fuzzies
