WWYDW: Who should play third line right wing?

Aside from a few pieces here and there, the Flames’ roster appears to be set. Sure, there are still a couple of extra players hanging around, but as training camp has progressed we’ve gotten an increasingly clear picture of just who the Flames will open their season with. The goalies look to be who we…

State of the roster races 2017: 5 cuts to go

The Calgary Flames trimmed down their roster yesterday, bringing their number of healthy bodies below 30 and kicking off the final stages of camp. Everybody on the active roster right now has a non-trivial chance of being an NHL player come puck drop on Oct. 4. Some of them have better chances than others, though….

Athletes didn’t drag politics into sport – it was already there

The Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves in an untenable position this week. The 2017 Stanley Cup champions had a choice to make. They could tour the White House and meet the President of the United States, as previous winners have done, thereby enraging his many vocal detractors. Alternatively, they could skip the event, provoking the same…

Flames reduce roster, cut 10 players

As we’ve seen following the last few preseason games, the Calgary Flames have decided to trim down their roster once again. Ten prospective Flames have been assigned elsewhere, reducing the team’s roster to 28 (excluding two injured players)

Can these three Flames do it again?

Dougie Hamilton, Mikael Backlund, and Micheal Ferland all had breakout performances during the 2016-17 season and were instrumental in getting the Calgary Flames back to the playoffs. But are repeat performances in the cards for this trio? If the answer is yes, the Flames should be in pretty good shape to return to the postseason.

FlamesNation Weekly Prospect Update: Hit the ground running

Back for another year, it’s the FN weekly prospect update! Hockey season truly is upon us now. There’s not a lot going on in these early weeks, with the first week of the CHL already in the books (and with almost half of the Flames’ CHL prospects absent from the proceedings) and the Europeans just…

Post-Game: Bubble burst by Jets

With a bunch of roster decisions to make, the Calgary Flames threw together a roster mostly full of players on the bubble and headed to Winnipeg to face a Jets team mostly made of opening day NHL bodies. The Flames had a few nice moments and plays here and there, but ultimately the bubble boys…

FGD: Going to Winnipeg (6pm MT, TSN3)

After taking the weekend off from preseason game action, the Calgary Flames are back at it as they try to trim their roster down to the regulation 23-man roster in time for the regular season to kick off in 10 short days. In the interim? They’re going to Winnipeg, for an exhibition game with the…

FlamesNation mailbag: Centering the focus

So it’s been a week since the preseason has begun, and we’ve come even less close to answering some of the big questions. In fact, there’s probably more questions to answer now. Some have underperformed, some have overperformed. Some have kicked the door down while others haven’t put their skates on. The winger spots, thought…

Slack Sundays: Making roster decisions during the preseason

Since last Sunday, the preseason has begun and the Calgary Flames have played four times. Three of those games were stinkers and as a result of some uninspired performances from players that we expected to challenge for NHL jobs, the roster situation is arguably even more murky. We to try to make sense of the…
