Flames recall Andrew Mangiapane from Stockton

Ladies and gentlemen, the Calgary Flames have (finally) summoned arguably their best offensively-minded prospect from the farm. The club has officially recalled winger Andrew Mangiapane from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.

To free up a roster spot, as expected, the Flames have placed Michael Frolik on the injured reserve.

A sixth round selection in a 2015 NHL Draft class that’s looking pretty good right now – Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington are other products from that draft – Mangiapane, 21, has been really, really good in the AHL after a stellar run in the Ontario Hockey League. He had back-to-back 100 point seasons with the Barrie Colts.

Skeptics probably went, “Yeah sure, Bryan Cameron was a good smaller offensive guy in the OHL and he amounted to nothing in the pros.” But Mangiapane has been good and consistent (and consistently good) with Stockton, even when recalls took away his center (Mark Jankowski) and his winger (Garnet Hathaway). In 98 AHL games, he has 34 goals and 74 points. This is his first call-up to the NHL.

For those of you running out to get jerseys, he wore 88 in training camp.

From the morning skate, via Pat Steinberg.

Wouldn’t have expected anything different from the vets over youngsters coaching genius of Gulutzan. Jagr better get his legs under him in a real hurry if he’s going to play on the shut down line.

    Gaudreau – Monahan – Ferland
    Bennett – Backlund – Tkachuk
    Mangiapane – Jankowski – Hathaway
    Brouwer – Stajan – Jagr

That’s looking pretty good, given the pieces GG will undoubtedly still use.

When Frolik returns, you move Brouwer back to RW, leave Mangiapane on LW/4th line, and end the Jagr experiment. We didn’t sign Jagr to be a 4th line mucker. His time in the league should come to an end. Albeit unceremonially.

    • Heeeeeere's Johnny!

This is also how I would draw it up. Benny and Chucky together will be a holy terror to deal with and Backlund doesn’t mind joining the party either.

Let’s play with the future a bit. Let’s say that Mangiapane makes an impact and claims a spot on this team. What do you do when Frolik comes back?

What winger comes out to give him a spot? I can see Jagr sitting for some games to give him a rest. But if he’s in then the only real candidate to be “out” is Brouwer. While that is what should happen, I wonder what will happen?

Unfortunately, Mangiapane will have to score at basically his pace in Stockton for him not to get the boot when Frolik comes back. Here’s hoping the kid knocks it out of the park, and they can’t return him to the farm.

    • WillyWonka

looks good except the 4th line, which, given the options, i’d personally rather see F Hamilton / Stajan / Lazar
the Jagr distraction has gone on long enough

  • Chucky

It is sad that injuries need to happen to get the talent out of Stockton. What happens if Mangi shows like Hathaway and Jankowski then Frolic returns? Would not surprise me if these nit wits sent Jasnowski down and moved Bennett back to center.

  • FlamesFanOtherCity

Insert comment from Gully where he needs time to adjust and practice with the Flames. At least BT made a move in a positive direction with this and the Lack trade.

General Gel will muck-up this call-up somehow! Probably put him on the 4th line and promote Browser to Frlik’s spot.

Hoping Mangiapane plays tonight somewhere in the top 9. Need some more youthful injection!

  • buts

Does anyone think Mang can excel under GG’s system and usage? I don’t, and I feel sorry for Ferland for getting screwed game in and game out. A smart coach would insert Mang right away and play him with some skill…..but we are talking about a smart coach….

    • Puckhead

It’s not like they play a different system in Stockton. Mangiapane will be fine. Here’s hoping he gets more than 8 minutes of ice time to showcase his abilities

    • Heeeeeere's Johnny!

I’m guessing he is familiar with the system as I believe Stockton plays the same so the prospects are familiar with it. There is nothing I can say that will help with GG’s mysterious usage.

      • Stockton's Finest

Difference is Mangiapane plays top line minutes with PP and PK time. Getting 4th line minutes with 2 anchors will stunt his growth (pun intended) Get him on the 3rd line with Janko and Hathaway and move Bennett up.

#FreedMangia. This is great news. If he gives the same kind of energy and influence that Jano and Hathaway have given, good things ahead for this team. They need to pick up points. Could be quite the learning curve if he plays against the potentially high powered Blackhawks tonight. I’ll take it. Also, it is time for our farm system to produce. The trade route has been Lacking. (Glad for that trade. Gillies and Parsons are queuing up for their chance right behind Rittich – who has really been delightfully good too.)

First 15 comments by FN are: he’s a scorer not a checker you need offence so play him with talent

Next comment is the projected lines by GG – he puts mani on the mucker 4th line.

GG and player useage a horrible combination. can’t wait to see how he distributes ice time (hint Brower will get more then five other forwards )

    • Alberta Ice

Hope GG sees the light and gets the line combinations better. Brouwer, Stajan, and Bartkowski just don’t seem to have the drive and energy they need these days.

  • Stajanforadirtyboot

Hope Mangiapane comes in and proves he belongs. Youth injection with a dash of excitement. I just hope he gets a fair chance and is not buried on the 4th line with Stajan and Brouwer-play with 8 minutes of ice time. He is a goal scorer, the Flames need goals, hopefully he is put in a position to achieve this.

The Frolik injury is a blessing in disguise, finally Andrew gets his chance. He should have been up year much sooner, he was already player of the month in October it is now the end of December before he gets to play.

At least they called him up with an apparent intention to play him over Lazar and Freddie. I’m not a GG fan, but I’ll at least give him credit for that move.

  • oddclod

Man he looks like St. Louis in these highlights.

My favs: pass in skates to to stick in traffic. top cheese.
    Top cheese off one knee.
    Filthy passing.

I feel like a Corleone at the dinned table.

    Mangi Mangi Mangi (:

Happy New Years my fellow mofos on FN!!!

Maybe a hungry fearless Mangy can light a fire under Gaudreau to play a little more on the edge & that rubs off on Monahan. Kudos to trading Lack, I didn’t think that was possible, 40 games late but hey whatever. First mistake corrected & some more corrections hopefully to come in 2018. I think Bart should get shipped down & lets put Prout in that #7 & use him against Oilers & any other team that pushes us around, I realize he’s a pilon but Engellend was good to have during some games that’s for sure.
